Is that the one where he freezes you then breaks you in half? Or is it the spine one!?
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Spine one.

For reference:

Scorpion, takes off his mask, revealing a skull, breathes fire on you leaving you a charred skeleton (Toasty!)
Sub Zero, noncahalantly grabs your throat and rips off your head and spine like a bad ass and holds it up to the crowd
Reptile, tales off his mask, revealing a reptile face, he then sticks out his tongue which sticks your face and then he rips off your head and eats it

Sweet. Ahhh the good ol days when most of the fatalities were impossible except for scorpions, and the only way to find out about them was to ask people in the arcades, who in turn, learned them from gaming magazines.

Stupid Internet. I sometimes hate technology  :lol
Pictures are overrated anyway.

back back down+low punch is impossible? (reptile)
fwd,fwd,down,fwd+HP is impossible? (subbie)

I ordered from Gamestop so I'll be getting it with the Scorpion stuff, I'm sure I can buy the rest online for some M$ points.

Getting the Tournament ED from Gamestop, I really wanted the Sub costume from Best Buy but it was not included with the kollectors or Tournament ED only the regular ED.
Also Boon stated they are unlockable in the game so no big deal. and keep in mind a classic costume for jade is included in the blu ray of Mortal Kombat/ Mortal Kombat annihilation.

My PSN is necroticart if anyone is playing the PS3 version can't wait to try out Kratos

I don't like the classic ninja costumes.  They made the fabric quilted for some reason.  In MKII especially (you could see it in cut-scenes) the fabric had a very subtle pattern.  These new classic costumes look like somebody cut up a snow jacket.

As excited as I am for this game, all the dlc is a little disappointing.  The one thing MK games always did was give you your money's worth.  I'm not sure how I feel about having an incomplete game.

Also it should be noted that classic costumes are applied in "classic kombat" mode of mk 9, so if you just want to see the costumes, then save your money.

Btw in terms of fatalities, sub-zero's doesn't hold a candle to TOASTY! or even the still vastly superior reptile head-snack.  ;)

Yer jokin right? The fabric pattern on the MKII ninjas was very "quilted". MK1 was cloth, MKII was quilted, MK3 was rubber, MK4 was bad textures, etc

so just go to http://www.mortalkombatii.net/index.php and mouse over the ninjas, especially their "cod cloth" (or whatever its called)

Whoa whoa WHOA. What do you mean "incomplete game?" Im so sick of this ---smurfin--- DLC crap. If the next DLC ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- for MvC3 isnt Venom or Captain Commando, Im never buying a ---smurfing--- Capcom game again.

What DLC ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- are you referring to? Just the costumes?

There are supposed to be DLC characters too, but the MK team is being all secretive about it.  Why? I don't know.  Its lame.  I am not against the DLC, but 5 bucks a chracter!  Come on, make it 2 bucks. Tops.  And does anyone really spend money for costumes?  Seriously?

And you know what the LAMEST thing of it all is?  At some point they will come out with a Game of The Year or Platinum Hits, or some other crap, that will have ALL the DLC incldued and it will be like 20 bucks.  That's what happened with Fallout and Oblivion.  I feel bad for the people that shelled out for their DLC and then found out that like a year later it was all packaged together with the game for 20 bucks.

See that doesn't look quilted to me.  Mind you the pattern is larger than I remembered, but that doesn't look "puffy" like it does in the mk9 videos.

Btw... I found a better pre-order bonus.

Walmart gives you a 10 dollar gift card.

So buy it there, save the gift card for your shopping and you have 10 extra bucks, so you can buy TWO dlc costumes.  ;)

I still play MKII on my cab in the basement/future game room , and the pattern is very noticeable but it does look a bit overdone from what Ive seen in the MK9 vids; I'll be able to tell you for sure on Tuesday

Agreed.... I'm getting all excited and stuff... going to pick it up tomorrow.

Do you know how rare it is for me to make a special trip just to pick up a game on launch day?

BTW..... can anybody find me a good pic of the new Shang TSung?  New MK means new avatar.  ;)

Malenko: I am not upset or anything...I just don't understand how I spoiled anything. I revealed less than themortalkombat.com and every single review for the game. Everyone knows it's a reboot. I didn't go into any detail..you guys posting pics of what the new characters look like is revealing way more than anything I posted.

Dont get butthurt, no ones mad. Ive been avoiding reviews and everything so that nothing was spoiled. Your post might have been clipped because you were posting about how you were playing a game you downloaded before it is even released (no piracy talk allowed even if its not ROMs).

LOL I am not "butthurt" or upset, I was just apologizing in case I pissed anyone off that's all. And oh yea I forgot that I mentioned the piracy bit. I will have to be more careful I guess. Anyhow..enjoy the game Malenko. If you are a fan of MK I know you will.

You didn't like the ones on xbox/ps2? I thought they were alright. There was one (I forgot which one) that I didn't care for that much. The one where you create your own fatality instead of there being set ones. What I didn't like about them was that they were just kind of updated versions of MK4 and I never cared for MK4 that much. (aside from the Continue countdown with your player falling down the pit. That was cool.)

Didn't your spoiler basically consist of "you will fight people"?

Bit heavy handed around here lately....

EDIT: I misunderstood PBJ's reply, so I removed what I said...too tired today.

No. Someone said that the game was incomplete and I stated that it wasn't because you can fight as certain characters which I won't name again. Not really a spoiler seeing as those same characters are advertised everywhere including their own website. But whatever...I am over it.

And your post got deleted because of that? Cmon thats kind of ridiculous. Im with PBJ, thats kind of ridiculous.  ::)

Yes PBJ is right...my "spoiler" did not spoil anything at all...but that's fine.

As Malenko said...it probably was deleted because I mentioned playing a copy on a modded 360...but that's still heavy handed in my opinion seeing as this entire forum is riddled with piracy talk....including any post about MAME. As long as the forum doesn't have links or directions on how to get pirated things I don't personally see the problem with stating that you have a pirated game or rom.  :dunno

Oh well...I am not that worried about it. I just think that if a mod or someone is going to delete my posts they should at least PM me and let me know why..

Had to stay at home to work on my car, so I went ahead and got it.... that was around 8:30-9:00....  It's 2:05 and I just came out of my MK "Koma."

Fantastic game.... loads of depth.  Also the unlockables, which include the alternate costumes and fatalities, are spread out in such a way that it should be a while before you unlock everything. And by "everything" I mean actual gameplay elements and not just koncept art and such.

Also the story mode is fantastic!  Best story mode I've ever seen for a fighting game.

Oh.... and Shang can morph again.   >:D

Yep I agree. The story mode is great. I am still playing story mode. With most fighting games the story mode could be beat in an hour or less but MK9's story mode is pretty epic. I like the Fatality training too. I haven't found too much I don't like about it yet.

Got it at midnight.  Story mode is awesome.  Such an amazing game.  Tons of unlockables.  Really an excellent game.  Stoked to play it more after work!

Lived up to the hype.

Im glad there are some things to actually unlock, unlike Capcoms ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- take on MvC3. Im still pissed off about that. There isnt really a story mode, and there virtually isnt anything to unlock except the 4 characters, which is basically nothing. I might have to get it then. I think Im gonna go PS3 cause the controller is better suited for fighting games.

I was also disappointed by MvC3's lack of unlockables. When I first started to play it I was excited every time I unlocked someone...then after 4 when nothing else was unlocking I was thinking "That can't be it" so one Google search away and.....yep...that's it. MvC3 is still a good game though. They really needed more though I agree. And since it doesn't have more the least they can do is make more DLC. It's been months since the last character pack which consisted of 2 characters that no one cares about. And now that interest has faded in the game I would be surprised if they even make anymore. It's a shame.

MK9 has a ton of stuff to unlock though. I would say that MK9 is worth spending your money on definitely.

Yeah I was stoked a couple of years back when they announced sfIV..... then I played it and reallized they had released a 15-20 dollar title at full retail price.  So when they started the "Super Ultra Twin Turbo:  Kosher Edition" crap again I passed.  So when MVC3 was announced I waited until far after it was released to check it out and as expected, I'll pass.  Don't get me wrong... once they hit the bargain bin I'll pick them up, but that will be when the price point actually meets the value.

Capcom's currently going through the "slump" mk had last generation in terms of innovation and content.  Hopefully they'll shape up soon.

Im kinda pissed/let down. I didnt get the Scoprion Pre-Order items, I got Ermac cause I was dumb enough to get the tournament edition of the game. I already unlocked Scopions Classic threads in game but not the classic fatality, so not all is lost.

The controller is kinda useless for MK9, I mean yeah its got the classic MK3 layout but the buttons don't make sense for this game.  I'm sure it'll come in handy for the ton of arcade games I have (even though I already built a 360 arcade stick) but now I kinda wish I got the book ends.

My girl Yorkie, Cammy, seems to like it though.

I got the sub zero, but it seems that the classic fatality is the same as regular subs second fatality, so I am guessing all I got was another costume.  I don't really care about costumes, to be honest, I play fighters for the fighting, not to play dress up  :dunno

Played king of the hill a little bit. It is TONS of fun, really captures a lot of the old arcade feel where you would crowd around a machine and wait your turn.  That in itself is what makes this game pretty special.  Went 1-1, and was on my way to winning my third match, when the game booted me.  There was a LOT of slowdown on it for a couple of matches, not sure if that was on my end, or if the servers were being crushed.

So you don't like the sticks huh?  How do they feel?  Happ comps, nice, but it would hav been cooler if they had p360's in there since that is what the MK2 cabs had.

I think this game is perfect for the 7 button layout in my cab;

         FP   - S Stance - BP
Tag -  FK -   Block -     BP

Lets you do an x-ray just by hitting the two middle buttons.

What good does switch stance do?

Yeah I was gonna get the stick, but I saw the X layout that I hated, even in the arcades and decided "no thank you".  I think the problem is the default layout for mk9... pretty much my only complaint about the game so far.  For years it's been a "square" layout with the left column for punches and the right for kicks.  Now for no apparent reason, even though you still have two punch buttons and two kick buttons, the top row is punch and the bottom row is kick.  Are they trying to copy street fighter?  The buttons can easily be reconfigured though.... I would suggest remapping everything in the classic fashion and you'll get more enjoyment out of it.

I don't have a clue why they kept the X though.... It seems that with the run button gone this would have been the perfect opportunity to move to a more traditional two rows of three layout.

Btw I don't know about the fatalities, but I"m pretty sure you can unlock "Klassic" mode via Kombat code and all the ninjas revert to their mk2 designs.

You know.... if you were a model citizen you might consider taking apart your new stick and making scans for the exact dimensions/ button layout.  I really really like the style of the new mk stick, but the button layout needs modified to smething more generic.  I would share any modifications to the design of course.

Im far from it, but I can take pix and what not. mebbe I can haz scan it if I get around to it. I do like the foam padding on the bottom for your legs and that you can flip it up for storage, the buttons even have like a plastic cage thingie under it to keep anything from catching the wires. The Wired controller PCB is nice and I'd love to get my hands on a bunch of those

Me. I was told it had a spoiler. I don't play fighters and had no idea if it was a spoiler or not, so erred on the side of least resistance. No conspiracy here folks...

Thanks to "the internet" there are very few things we don't know about a game prior to it's launch.  Althought I've already found a secret or two in mk9... this thing is crazy!

Yeah that's what I'm saying.... the design is damn near perfect.... it's just the button layout that needs work.  I need to do some research but I might be able to do something about the pcb situation..... not the same pcb obviously, but the same concept of having something that's easy to modify.

So yeah, pics measurements and what have you would be welcomed.

I actually took a break from MK9 last night. But I do like it a lot. It is probably the best fighter to come out in a while, especially when based on content. Not that I disliked SF4, SSF4, MvC3, Tekken 6, Soul Calibur IV and some of the others, but they were very light on the content. After playing through them a few times the novelty was over. With MK9 I keep coming back for more.

Yeah I finished story mode and the ending is pretty F'ed up when you think about how it'll effect future sequels, but the ending IS good.  I might have to start a spoilers-only thread just to discuss all the crazy stuff that happens during story mode.

Turns out the arcade mode has cinematic endings for each of the characters like a classic mk game would.... so I've still got to beat it 28 MORE TIMES!

There is also the challenge ladder, which I am enjoying immensely.... mostly full of stupid ideas we haven't seen since the umk3 era.  That'll take hours and hours to complete as well.

And I'm about halfway through unlocking the krypt.....  like most of the Krpyts... mostly artwork and crap, but the kombat codes, alt costumes and fatalities are worth unlocking.  I think I would be more impressed by unlockable artwork if I could actually do something with it.  No unlockable themes for my dashboard?  No unlockable avatar crap?  Hell it's 2011, are you telling me that developers couldn't rig up a way so that unlocakable images could be emailed to an account so you could use them as wallpaper on your pc?  I mean the FRIKKIN Wii emails images from games to you.

Oh and about building sticks.......

http://shoryuken.com/f177/using-guitar-hero-controllers-source-pcbs-183505/

Scroll down to the area where the pcb picture is shown.  That's a rockband guitar pcb....  as you can see no soldering would be required, it is pretty much just a standard pin-header deal.  You can even use the ribbon cable that hooks up to the guitar buttons for your stick so you are good to go.  Game guitars, especially wired ones, are pretty much worthless at this point now that the bottom has fell out of the music game fad.  You can pick up a used one at big lots for under 20 bucks or even a new one for that price at a big lots or similar store.  I think buying one of these controllers seems like a better idea than hacking a gamepad based on looks alone.  The only downside is that most guitar controllers only output 6 buttons... not the full 8.  I've yet to see a fighting game use that many though and all fighters are re-configurable.

the buttons on the stick are dead on balls accurate to the MK/MKII/MK3 buttons  the MK1 kit template I have lines up PERFECTLY except  the controller distance. The High Punch and High Kick buttons are 3 1/4" on center apart, and High Punch and low punch are  2" on center apart . Low Punch and block are 1 5/8" on center apart horizontally, and 1" vertically.

I'll measure the over all box and take pix later tonight

Yeah, that's as I suspected.... the joystick distance and the overall dimensions of the box are what I'm concerned about.

I'll probably keep the dimensions and joystick distance but tighten up the buttons a bit and make it two rows of three (and possibly a 7th "neogeo" button).

Hey Kombat heads:

So:
1) There are babalities and hidden kombatants to fight.  You think there will be animalities? Tag Team Fatalities?
2) WTF does switch stance do?

For number 1 I would say it's unlikely, but then again there are no mentions of babilities in the game and they exist.  I'm rooting for friendships to return myself.... BUY A SCORPION DOLL!!!

The hidden combatants are pretty cool, but without spoiling anything they are pretty much the 3d equivelent of pallette swaps.  I personally find that to be a fun touch of nostalgia... others might be disappointed.

2.  Switch stance makes your character switch their posture to either favor their left or right side.  For 99.9% of the game it is utterly pointless.  In some challange ladder matches though certain limbs are disabled/cut off and you can use the switch stance to shift your weight and thus regain some functionality.  Long story short, don't worry about it.

MK4 was pretty lackluster for me. At the time when 3D fighters were big, MK4 had the worst graphics of them all (remember, Tekken 2 and Soul Blade were out at the same time) and the controls weren't very good/confusing (my opinion). The console only versions of MK were hit or miss. MK9 is obviously good though.

MK4 was doomed from the start... developed for the untested Zeus hardware and made right as Tobias was leaving the company.  It used the same control scheme as all previous MK's though so I don't have a clue what you mean there.  They added 3d movement, but that's about it.

What you've got to remember though is flaws aside Mortal Kombat was still awesome where as Tekken and Soul Blade are lame.

Soul Blade's reason for sucking is pretty obvious but as for tekken.... if your primary control scheme revolves around having to grab your opponent before you can do a special then you have created a "Wrasslin'" game, NOT a fighting game!

For any other reason MK4 was pretty good just because of the re introduction of Goro and the addition of Quan Chi and his leg beat-down fatality.  :D

Plus as a whole 3d fighters suck and it was a horrible idea to ever try to bring fighter control scheme's into 3d.  The fact that SFIV, MVC3 and Mortal Kombat 9 have all switched back to 2d pretty much proves that you need 2d controls to make a successful fighter.  Well that and fireballs.... no fireballs = no fighter! ;)

ARe there Animalities? I thought those were pretty lame, with the exception of scorpions shark one. Or was it sub zeros? I dont remember. MK1 2 and 3 were big for me, I didnt play anything else after those.

nothing confirmed yet, Scorpion turned into a penguin and laid an exploding egg at the opponents feet. Sub Zero turned into a polar bear and mauled you, Cyrax had the shark animality. I liked/loved all the 2D MKs (even mythologies wasnt that bad) and hated all the 3D MKs till now, well not including Shaolin Monks but DEFINITELY including MK Special Forces.

H_C please dont try to convince us MK4 was anything more then a turd,  even MK4 Gold was pretty crappy and it was suposed to be a tweaked MK4 with more characters n stuff. Capcom didnt make any 3D street fighters (Arika did, and they were actually quite good and had fireballs) and all the Marvel vs Capcom games have always been on a 2D plane and until MvC3, sprite based............so only Mortal Kombat went 3D and switched back to 2D

Also,  I found classic Sub Zero's animality in UMK3, its epic:

Howard: I was only comparing MK4 to Tekken and Soul Blade graphically. Graphically all other 3D fighters at the time had the edge over MK4. I remember when MK4 first came out I looked at the graphics and it looked so primitive. That is not the reason I don't like it though. When I mentioned controls...yes the standard moves like Scorpion's Back, Back, Low-Punch worked fine, but most of the newer moves were harder to pull off. But I also did not play MK4 a whole lot because I didn't like anything about it, except for the Continue countdown. Now that I could watch all day.  ;D

I like the 2D MKs much better, the 3D ones after MK4 were better graphically but still sort of handled like MK4 control wise. I didn't get into them as much as the 2D ones.

Malenko: Yea I dug the Street Fighter EX series as well. Most of the people I knew hated them though. LOL

For any other reason MK4 was pretty good just because of the re introduction of Goro and the addition of Quan Chi and his leg beat-down fatality.  :D

I remember seeing someone pull off that leg-beating fatality in the arcade... I think my jaw hit the floor... lol.  So awesome.   :burgerking:

Don't take this the wrong way Malenko.... but the fact that you didn't like the prior 3d games (which weren't fantastic but still pretty good) shows that you have rather poor taste in MK fighters anyway.  Don't get me wrong, Armageddon was DEFINATELY a turd, but the other two were quite good and most of the things we are seeing in mk9, in terms of new specials, back-story, personalities, and costume designs came out of MK:D and MK:DA.  The story mode that everybody is praising would have never happened without the baby steps towards it that occured in the 3d games.

I think the problem is you compare the MK games to previous MK games.  I do that too, but I also compare it to whatever else is out at the time.  The 3d games were DEFINATELY better than their competition.  We have suffered through a long drought of fighting games... just be glad they are good again.  :D

Dont misunderstand me, MK4 was definately not the high-point of the MK franchise, but it wasn't a low point either.  Worse than MKII, UMK3 and the other 3d interations, but better than Armageddon and possibly a few others.  It was a transition game and therefore had a lot of problems, but I can't really see bashing it when it added so much to the story and gameplay mechanics of future games.

You misunderstood my comment about sfiv and the like btw...  My point was it used to be that when a fighter was going to "reinvent" itself it went to 3d, now they are distinctively going 2d or staying there.  The three top sellers are all 2d gameplay-wise and all future fighters we know of with the exception of (BLAH!) tekken are going to be 2d.

Btw... Bootay.... I liked Ex as well... never understood why they abandoned 3d so quickly.

I didn't dislike the MKs on Xbox except for the one where you create your own fatality. Which one was that? They were much better than MK4...and you know I may have been too hard on MK4. It's my least favorite one, but it's still MK. And damn I love the continue countdown....Whenever I have the Dreamcast going, I always fire MK4 up at least once to watch the Continue countdown. hehe

The EX series of Street Fighter was cool...but the names were such a mouthful. Street Fighter EX2 Plus Alpha....why couldn't it just be Street Fighter EX2?? heh

MK9 spoilers below:

I didnt really like the MK4 story either, Quan Chi and Shinnok just dont appeal to me. You can tell that the MK guys didnt really like the story of the console MKs because they pretty much ignored that arc (other then Quan Chi and Shinnok) in the new MK game and focused more on the MK1 to Umk3 arcs. I'm sure when MKX is released around next year they'll reference some of the "other stuff" but it appears they are abandoning a lot of that canon.

As for the console MKs , as fighting games they were ok, but as Mortal Kombats I hated them. I liked the first one of the 3 the best, but I cant say I was a fan of how it played, how it looked, or who was in it. Armageddon while bad was just fan service, so I didnt have high hopes. Special Forces was the low point, with MK4 a close second, and MK:Sub Zero a distant 3rd.

My real issue with the previous console MKs, was they felt like a different game staring MK characters and the gameplay was SOOO SLLLOOWWWWWW. What mechanics of MK4 made it into other games? Picking up random objects to throw? Nope.  Pulling out weapons? They canned that too. low-poly & low textures? thankfully gone. MK4 was also the last MK game to use the "standard" MK button layout.

Compare MK to whats out at the time? sure. MK4 came out in 1997. That puts it up against Tekken 3, Soul Edge Ver II, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter 3, Street Fighter EX Plus, Rival Schools, Last Blade,  Final Fantasy VII (it came out in 1997 but I was just seeing if you were paying attention), Virtua Fighter 3, and Vampire Savior 2. MK4 is probably at the bottom of that list.

As for them abandoning 3D in street Fighter "quickly" it was about 5 years between the release of Street Fighter EX and console release of Street Fighter EX 3. The naming convention was funny on the EX titles though.

Street Fighter EX             -original release
Street Fighter EX plus      -"super update"
Street Fighter EX plus a   - console release of SFEX+
Street Fighter EX 2          - arcade sequel
Street Fighter EX 2 plus   - "super update" & console release
Street Fighter EX 3          - console release

Street Fighter has always had the best names. Street Fighter Zero 2 dash gold, Super Street Fighter II Turbo X: Grand Master's challenge, Street Fighter II Dash Turbo

I feel exactly the same on the MK4 and Xbox MKs. I don't hate them, but I don't like them as much as 1, 2, 3, and they just don't feel the same. Like you said, they feel like a fighter starring some MK characters. I never mentioned Special Forces or Mythologies because I hated both of those games and technically they don't count as MK fighters. But as a MK non-fighter, I did like Shaolin Monks.

As for them abandoning 3D in street Fighter "quickly" it was about 5 years between the release of Street Fighter EX and console release of Street Fighter EX 3. The naming convention was funny on the EX titles though.

The EX games weren't very common in the states arcade wise. I can forgive him not knowing how long the EX series was around because it was mainly the Japanese crowd playing and enjoying those. If not for the PS1 I am not sure how many people would even know of the existence of the SFEX series. Either way I felt the EX series worked rather well.

We are going to have to agree to disagree guys.  95% of the games you both mentioned in opposition to MK4 seemed pretty darn crappy, gameplay-wise, to me.  And like I said, I never said it was the greatest Mk game of all time, far from it... it just isn't THAT bad.

Getting back on topic (which we abandoned long ago) Toys R' US as leaked that the DLC costumes will be available to all Wednesday.

As to weather we'll have to actually pay for them... that's still up for debate.

I've actually found a way to get a "free" dlc fatality without hacking, but it seems rather useless at this point.

Both if possible.

Aside from the measurements I'm mostly interested in how the piano hinge is mounted, the ladder-style hinge that holds the panel open and the memory foam on the bottom and the offset between the hard bottom and the foam.

ok, time to remeasure:

CP area: 17 3/4" x 10 1/4"
stick 4 3/8" from the left and 5 1/8" from the top
stick to HP/LP buttons 6 3/8"

Any other measurements you wanted?

Yeah, the box dimensions if you get time.

I'm going to take your measurements along with a mk3 template I found and just make plans in photoshop for this thing.  That way anybody can make one by just printing out a few pages and tracing it to the wood.

I think my personal stick is going to be a tad smaller though.  I pretty much hate everything about the sfIV stick except for the fact that the decal fits on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper so anyone can customize their stick.  The layout on my mame cab is pretty darn close to that, so I might be able to make a compact version of this.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time.... I don't have all the arcade hardware on hand at the moment, but I do have the wood.  I might go ahead and bang one of these out this weekend as a prototype.

Btw, the forum has been eating my replies slightly more than usual as well.  Problem at the server end Saint?
