Old pc desk to control panel.
« on: September 09, 2012, 04:50:22 am »
Hello all i was looking through my old junk the other day when i came across my old pc desk. You guys know what happened next, and i guess these types of builds are frowned upon here, But ohwell ;D

a quick test with buttons inplace

as you can see i took some of the plastic coating off the desk while drilling the holes. so i decided to cover these up with stickers.

Thats all ive managed to do so far. but the larger holes will be covered with some speaker grills. then i will have to wire and box the control panel off.

Are you planning on using some tupperware or similar to protect the wiring on the underside?

Spacing looks way off on the buttons. I don't think you printed off those layouts at the right size.

I think it resized to fit page.  Looks more like 50mm spacing on centres :) Would be ok for bigger hands. Slap a 28" LCD up on top and voila instant Deskacade.  Seems as good a use for the computer table as anything else you would do with it.  Hopefully these are all parts you had laying around just waiting for some use to come of them and not purchased specifically :)

Looking at that desk makes me glad I didn't add the joy and buttons to my workstation.  :lol
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

I don't usually like to be negative, but this looks like it could have had the potential to be decent, but the button spacing and stickers kinda kills it for me.

This is a pretty neat idea.  How hard would it be to replace the wood and try again.  To stop the chipping you saw, you could have done 2 things, cut the whole half way on one side, then half way from the other, or clamp a peice of scrap wood over the whole you were cutting, so you drilled into that wood rather then just push out from the inside.

i would give it another go, and try to re space the buttons properly.

It shouldn't be too hard to replace the wood, in fact the desk has a pretty nice frame to work with. How about enclosing it, Here's an example, (sorry I'm at work and only have "paint" to work with).
Those 3 circles are the admin buttons. You can even enclose the monitor.   ;D
