PS3-Should I Jailbreak? Why Why not?
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:00:36 am »
Hello
I have not touched my PS3 in months as I have been debating getting it jailbroke.  It sits right now at firmware 3.41.  Any one have any suggestions? Why jail break and why not?  I know you can play backups which saves money, however with 2 kids and another on the way I do not really want to mess with loading and unloading patches etc........(when new games need new firmwares).  I know very little about this so maybe its easier than I think?  Besides backups, I know it will play roms etc.. however I collect original games as a hobby so no need for those. What do you guys think?

sounds like I would say no.  Why go through the trouble of jailbreaking something to play new games you don't have the time to "acquire" much less play?  Or to play old games which you won't play on the system?
Unless you want to do it just to do it?  :dunno

Hey
I am leaning to NOT doing it. I have modded a PSONE, XBOX and WII in the past.  I find that I spent more time downloading games then playing.

Hey
Yea I was talking about custom firmwares.
As I mentioned I have no wish to play the roms on my tv, I collect retro consoles now, and have a lot.
I am thinking to update the firmware and using the ps3 as normal. I just do not want to update and then regret it.

There's no reason for jailbreak anymore, it's moved onto custom firmware.

I'm just wondering, what does "custom firmware" mean compared to "jailbreaking" a PS3?

I have a modded offline 360 and wii and I have been wondering the same thing about my ps3, to mod or not.

Hey
How does it work when a game needs new firmware? I read something about eboot patches? how does that work?

If you're not using the PS3 for anything, then there's no reason right now to jailbreak it.  If you want to use it to play games, then a custom firmware is the way to go because you can load all your games onto a hard drive and play from there.  There's a noticeable speed difference playing from the internal HD and you can keep your games tucked away in a safe spot.

I don't have any idea how things work with game updates and newer firmwares.  I stopped accepting official updates when they took linux support out.

Some games use the PSN to release patches/fixes to games once they are published. You might lose this functionality on future games if you hack the firmware on the console. I don't know how they authenticate non-hacked PS3s.

Yea that would make sense. I mean just because you bought a crappy piece of software doesn't mean you should have to sign up with PSN to "fix" it.

I plan to jailbreak mine.  It's been in storage since mid-October so I know that I won't have firmware problems.  I mostly just want to steal games.

I think you should jailbreak it, then send an anonymous letter to Sony telling them you did so, and for them to go ---fudgesicle--- themselves.

I've been on the verge of doing this same thing.

I have no interest in games (well, ps3 games), but want it for homebrew, and REALLY want to see xbmc on it, or some other media player that is better than the stock dashboard, which I don't think should be too difficult to do, as the stock dashboard sucks.  Sadly, I've learned that no one seems to want to even attempt to port xbmc over to the ps3, so now I'm not sure what to do with my machine.  All I wanted was a media center that can push HD tv, unlike my xbox 1.

the other main thing that is keeping me from jailbreaking mine, is that I'd like to sign up for streaming netflix, but I think you have to go through sony's services/site to get there, and I'm afraid of signing up and then getting blacklisted.  Anyone done such a thing?

Maybe you can get one of the netflix blurays they were sending out before they released the downloadable version.  You might not need to be signed in to use the disk.

Get an Apple TV 2.  It's been jailbroken and runs XBMC.  It also does Netflix.  And it's just $99.  It only outputs 720p, though.

shmokes: Have you tried that yet? I was curious how fast/stable it is compared to an old xbox.

No, I would have but my in-law's TV doesn't have HDMI so they got something else.  I run it on an iPad, though, and it runs well.  I assume it's at least as good on the Apple TV.

I can 100% confirm you get the patches without a PSN account, so long as you enable the internet connection.  You can also download and install the patches yourself, etc.

Hey PBJ,

How exactly do you do that?  And does it also work for the 360?

Don't know/care about the 360.  I've never taken one online except to download the divx update.

PS3 will automatically pick up the game updates on an internet connected machine.  It's why you have to wait an hour to play Metal Gear unless you disable your connection.  Google 'ps3 game update manager' if you want to manage the updates from a PC.

Great!  Thanks, PBJ.

Just update to OFW 3.55 and then load CFW, there always making work arounds for psn and stuff but the point is that if you CFW it you get a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- load of features esp backing up of games on hard drives, OFW 3.6 is nothing special at all, i would of stayed on 3.55 if i would of known. I say load CFW and have a blast with games and movies that you can just download, or rip and have fun.

What kind of ps3 you have? looking for a ps3 slim to trade for a brand new sealed Nintendo 3ds. Don't ask.. it's remnants of a failed plan :'(. Anyways, I'm looking for a ps3 w/ ofw 3.55 or lower :) to trade for it. If you have an old fat ps3 that might work if it has a warranty sticker still and is backwards compatible.

Think of how much better this will be with kids! You can play and poot in privacy. Just don't let your kids play, it makes them go blind I hear ;P

But seriously, anyone want to trade? pm me  ::)

I have a Custom firmware installed on mine and I'm just upset that I cannot access netflix and play on PSN with the games I own.  I just want a good media player option in homebrew (which they still don't have yet on the ps3).  I might just upgrade back to official firmware.  There are some games coming out this year that I want to play and dont want Sony banning me so I cannot play them.

I stopped installing custom firmware, modding, etc. my consoles.  I did it with the original Xbox and PSP but reversed it.   Partially I was being a purist (I rather have my consoles in "official" condition), but mostly I didn't really benefit from any of the features messing with the boxes added.   I wasn't particularly fond of much of the Homebrew I downloaded, and when it comes to "backups" - I would always rather just have the original disc/case (much like I'd rather have a vinyl copy of an album I paid for rather than a free copy on MP3).   Plus, as Hoagie_one pointed out, it can be a pain to run official software sometimes.

But that's just me.  Your (the OP) reasoning may differ; though if you have to ask, you'd probably be better off not "jailbreaking".
