WG 4600 series with vertical line only - fixable?

Sorry if this has been discussed previously. Couldn't find it in past threads and I'm a complete noob to monitors. Picked up a Contra game and when it powers on the only thing on the monitor is a vertical line of about a 1/4 inch or so. Sound works fine and it seems the game is playing - can hear the shooting, and notice some fluctuation in the line when jumping, and it's obvious by the sound when the player dies. Tried turning all the knobs that I could see inside but nothing really happened - one of them did make the line thinner and almost disappear. Wondering if I need to do a cap kit or if there is something else wrong or if the monitor can even be salvaged? Thanks in advance.

Cold solder joints on both the main board header pins and the daughter card connectors.

Also, if the monitor has never had a capkit if would be a good idea to install one. The capkits sold by Bob Roberts and by Zanen Electronics also include a brand new "black level" trimpot which is a high failure item.

You have vertical collapse.
One thing to remember on that game, what looks to be a vertical line (top to bottom) is actually a horizontal line because that monitor is on its side.
Definately do the capkit and resolder those headers on for the smaller daughter boards and then you may need to do some more work on the vertical circuit from there.

Yes, forgot it was a vertical monitor - that would've made finding an answer easier I suppose. Looks like I've got some work to do. thanks a ton.

There ain't a vertical output IC on the 4600 "card" monitors, its a pair of discrete transistors. But, resolder the header pins/sockets on the vert/horiz card and the solder side of the main board first. Thats a common failure on those monitors. Otherise, they are really the best arcade monitor in terms of reliability.

The vert/horiz board is the one with the hold adjust pots on it and is a brown-ish color. The other board next to it is the color amplifier board. Resolder any cracked solder you find while yer "in there".....

I agree on the 4600s reliability. I have found both the 4600 and the 4900s to give good service.

4900s were fairly decent, but they had a problem with cracked solder on the horiz width coil. The board would become burned in that area if it was left that way for too long. The 7000s were reeeeealy bad about this. I've seen 7000 chassis boards with *big* holes burned around the width coil. They really shoulda reinforced the mounting for that coil by putting it in some kind of retainer frame and using flying wire leads to make the PCB connections.
