You need 3 things:

1) a PSP that is either a 1000 or 2000 model
2) a pandora battery
3) a magic memory card.

details:
1)  The old "fat" psps are the easiest to hack.  some 2000's can be hacked, a 3000 or psp go cannot be hacked

2) a pandora battery is a special battery that powers on the PSP as soon as its plugged in, unlike regular batteries.  You need this to enter service mode on your PSP.  UNLESSS, that is you have firm ware version 5.03 or lower, in which case you don't need one.

3) a magic memory card is just a memory card that has the exploit on it.

I hacked mine, its cool, I ahve SNES and nes and SMSM and genesis emulators on it.  You can put gba emulators on it too, as well as play psx games.

First check to see what version of the psp you have, then just google "psp, pandora battery, magic memory card, cfw"

You tube, is also really valuable. Do a search on you tube for "psp CFW"

You can make a Magic Memory card yourself.  You may have to buy a pandora.   All in all, modding it isn't hard, doesn't take long and is totally worth it.  Personally, I think most PSP games suck, so getting mine hacked made it all worth it.

At the moment I do not have a psp... would be nice to buy pre hacked one.
Too load games onto it can you use a usb stick? How much internal memory does a psp have?
thanks

get a old psp, get a used 1000 on ebay.  They are a little bigger then the slims, but then for sure you will know its hackable.  Don't buy a pre-hacked one, not worth it when you can mod it easily for cheap/free.  I would only pay for mods that are 1) a pain in the ass or 2) require soldering and stuff.  This requires neither.

Not sure if the psp has any internal memory, everything is stored on micro sd cards.  No you cannot use a memory stick to load games, everything loads of the micro sd.

Internal memory is only for system use (nand is like 32mb I think) and its only used for firmware flashing.

Memory stick of choice is the pro duo (4gb is around 25 dollars).

The psp cannot be the host so it cannot use anything that requires one.

I recently helped my friends get custom firmware on their systems (two 1000s and a slim) and it wasn't that hard.  I'm not sure offhand where I found it but there was an installer that would test the firmware on the psp to see if it was compatible.  Pretty sure you can find it on here as hellcat recovery flasher.

The memory stick can be used again as a regular memory stick whereas the pandora battery cannot if I remember correctly.  The memory can be made by using a pc program too.  The battery requires another psp running custom firmware or you can buy one from dealextreme.  You can convert the battery from pandora back to normal if you keep the backup bin file or something when you originally make it.

Check B/S/T for a cfw psp.  I remember a few listed there.

Yeah once you get CFW on it , get IR shell.  I have a PSP server, and I can play games, stream movies and music from it.

Besides Wireless is faster than the MS.  Make sure you get a good battery.

Hey,
Does it matter what firmware is on the 1000 when I buy it or can all be downgraded.?
What are all all the different emulators it will play? What can I expect to pay for a 1000?
Lastly how is battery life?
thx

Jim

You can get one for probably less than 100 bucks.  Here is one from amazon for 88 w/free shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000F2DE8S/ref=sr_1_10_olp?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1299889953&sr=1-10&condition=used

you can play all the old 16 bit and 8 bit consoles.  It does have a mame emulator, but its garbage from what I hear.  It will run all playstation 1 games flawlessly, as this was a feature that Sony itself built in.

I THINK you can downgrade your firmware on a 1000, but you may need a pandora to do it.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, since a lot of people never go online with their PSP or update their firmware.

Battery life is decent, and additional batteries are cheap.

-ark, what do you mean psp server?  sounds cool

Hey
Cool. Any links to what I would need to do to it? Also does it play N64 full speed yet? I am debating this thing and the Caanoo but Caanoo does not do n64 and its 50 more.

As far as I know it does not do n64.

Google psp mods, or you tube psp mods and you should find answers real quick

Its software that allows the PSP to pull ISOs MP3, AVI/Xvid files via the IR-Shell client - I run it on that thin Client PC I use for (practically everything now) the inter home server.  The only thing the server doesn't have access to is the Internet, but I can always access the Wifi router if need be.

Its pretty cool.

Oh BTW Mame4All on the PSP runs full speed with sound.  I think it uses .32 romsets.

Unfortunately N64 support is something that will never be 100 percent.  I think the emulator was daedelus or something that had some games running somewhat okay.

I'm not familiar with the pspgo's modibility so I cannot comment on it.

Also I think I might have used HEN instead of Hellcat now that I think about it.  I can find the bookmarked links I used on my other desktop (just need to hook it back up to my tv) so sometime this weekend I'll post them here.

Concerning the current firmware on the psp.  Its my understanding that as long as you can get into service mode (via pandora battery) you can change the firmware on any psp (exceptions based on certain motherboards of course).

Check here for a really simple guide.

I thought MAME4all ran like garbage on the PSP, especially the 1000. I'll have to check that out and that IR sheller doo-hickey.

ArkAder, what do I have to do to get you to divulge your thin client set up?

Its a Itona  Via C3 ITX 1Ghz, 256MB running W2K Server, Win98, DOS, Linux but I have it running Win2K Server with a cheap 20GB Laptop drive, served with NAS.

Whisper quiet and draws 1W when in standby.

Not good for Mame but great for all those old Dos games and emulators.

I have my Xbox for Mame.  ;D

On other question.
What happens if a new game comes out requiring newer firmware?
I am guessing it can not be played.

Not a problem, they update the cfw all the time.

I thought I saw a premodded one in the bay thread a day or two ago
