A friend of mine told me I should get maximus for my mame arcade? I saw online it cost $25 for a 30-day trial. Anyone know how much it actually costs after the trial? also, is there another front end worth getting. I am looking for something easy to use since I am new to all this stuff. Thanks for the help.

This question is a bit random, as its like asking what car to buy for your first car.
I'd recommend you browse the forums and read up on the different FE's, try them out and find the one which suites you the most.

Have you checked out MaLa?

flipwitnrg,
That didn't sound right AT ALL ($25 for a 30-day trial), so I went and took a look... it's not $25 for a 30-day trial, the 30-day trial is free.  After the 30-day trial, you either pay $25 for a registration key, or you uninstall the software from your system.  ;)

Couple years ago MA was being updated almost monthly. But its dead now. I still use it but i have an updated registration for the last version (2.10). And i hear of people paying and never getting a reg. code. I hate to say this, but i'd recommend staying away. At least until Mameseer brings it back from the dead.."Rise From Your Grave!"

I can recommend it. I bought it a couple of months ago and got a registrationcode within a couple of days. Tried Hyperspin first and although that looks stunning too, it would not run smoothly on my 1,6Ghz Pentium4 machine.

You can try Maximus out for free for 30 days (which I did first) and it works very simple. After 30 days it is $25. It also has favorites, which is great when friends come over to play games and they don't have to wade through 8000 MAME games, only the favorites.

It may not get regular updates anymore, but IMHO it does not need them anyway. Once you've got your game system running, you won't be tinkering with it anyway (at least, not me)  ;D

I use it and it does not have updates to add more emulators but there are work arounds in the maximus section of this forum.  It needs alot less computer power than hyperspin.  Overall it has less flash but is fairly easy to use.

I suggest MA most stuff works well on it and it's quick and easy to setup as stated before it's hard to get a license for it since last I've heard Mameseer just up and disappeared.

I like hyperspin. It's a little hard, but if you're just using it for mame it'll be easy. It's free but I would recommend paying for access to their ftp so you can download game themes fast and paying for the emumovies ftp access to get videos for your games.

Some people are rude about helping people on their forums if you haven't checked their guides, but they have great guides that really do explain everything (written and video guides).

I'd say look up youtube videos of the frontends and see which one looks more appealing to you.

I used to love Maximus and it still has a certain fondness in my heart, but don't get it!  Seriously.  >:( but if you do and you're lucky enough to get a registration code, it is very easy to setup for the systems it supports.

From the ones i've tried here they are in terms of difficulty to setup

more difficult mamewah > hyperspin > gameex > maximus arcade easiest

in terms of most visually appealing (based on defaults) and this is only my opinion

pretty hyperspin > gameex> maximus arcade > mamewah pretty ugly

gameex seems really intriguing, I didn't really fully configure it but I think it has options to captures video when you play games and automates a lot of the process.

Cool, thanks everyone for your responses. Since I am new to the game, I think I am going to try Mala. Seems to be a favorite. I think I will just get maximus through a buddy of mine who has it since they arent giving out registration codes anymore. I don't want to pay for it and not hear anything back from anyone and just be a$$ed out for some money.

As this is no longer supported, do we still need to pay for the reg code???
ie, there are places on the net where full version can be dled for free (i wont link).

Or is this wrong?

I thought as its no longer supported then it wouldnt matter and is classed as abandonware?

Honestly, I wouldn't say that Maximus is not supported or consider it as abandonware.   Their website is still up and he is still selling the FE.  I'm sure any purchases will get a registration code, but it may not be within a couple days.  It may take a bit longer, but I'm sure you'll get a registration code.  If you are seriously looking into getting it, purchases are done through PayPal.  If you don't get a registration code within a reasonable amount of time then you can have PayPal dispute the charge.  Enough disputes and PayPal would eventually close the account and then MA could be considered dead.  If you want to use Maximus; then purchase it and support the developer.

I used Maximus for about 4 years before I hooked up with HyperSpin.  Maximus is a great "starter" front end and I'd definitely recommend it, even to this day.  Even without updates it still does what it was coded to do.  MAME and most emulators still work just fine via Maximus.  Maximus is easy to setup and get running with little effort.  Mala is definitely a good front end and still has on-going support, however it's age is catching up.  Of course I would definitely recommend HyperSpin if you are willing to put in a little more effort.  With HyperSpin 2.0 in the works; now is a great time to start learning how HyperSpin works.... HyperSpin 2.0 is going to blow HyperSpin v1 out of the water, as well as most other front ends with the amount of new and unique features that are being added.

I didnt really check out Mala, I actually looked at some videos of Hyperspin on youtube and was digging that so I downloaded Hyperspin but there is nothing on it, no videos or emulators or roms so that is my next step.

HyperSpin does not come with videos.  Videos can be picked up from our friends at Emumovies.com.  No front end should ever include emulators or roms.

HyperSpin will require more knowledge and setup than other fe's.  HyperSpin setup really isn't that difficult, but knowing how to use CLRMAMEPro to audit your roms will go a long long way.  HyperSpin also has higher system requirements than other front ends.  A decent dual core computer with 2 to 4 gb of ram is really needed to run HyperSpin at full settings.

CLRMAMEPro is a rom auditor.  It will scan and audit your roms to verify that they are named correctly and are valid roms.

Emulators you would get from their respective websites.  For roms... no one is going to tell you where to get them.  Not on this site, not on the HyperSpin site and most sites like this will NOT allow members post where to get roms.  Google is your friend!

As far as getting started with HyperSpin... Everything you need to know should be in our Documents section on the site.

I'm from the netherlands so stopping by is not really an option but i would advise to go trough the steps yourself. Im now completly done with setting up HyperSpin and it really is not that difficult. The great advantage of doing it yourself is that you know how everything is setup and your are pretty much independent. Otherwise you will be looking for help with everylittle thing you run into.

I would start by making a list of the emulators you want for your cabinet. (I would strongly advise to keep this list as lean as possible.) I had N64 up and running but got rid of it beceause it wasnt fun to play with arcade controls. I now have MAME, NES, SNES, SEGA GENISSES, SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, Grid wars and Visual Pinball.

Install hyperspin but don't start using it just yet. First begin setting up everything one by one.
Make sure it works outside of hyperspin first.

The reason i would suggest installing hyperspin at this point is beceause of the directory structure it provides for you. Put all the emulators / roms in the correct dirs wil safe you some copy/paste work in the future.

The hardest part of all is going to be, getting all your roms and making sure they are renamed according to the (no-intro) sets used by Hyperspin  databases (which are nothing more then XML files).

If you find yourself stuck at some point, PM me and il be happy to reply and point you in the right direction.

I recommend this approach.  Get all your emulators running the way you want and then set up your front end.  That way, if something is not working in your front end, it will be easier to troubleshoot.
