new XP install mamwah fullscreen issue
« on: August 23, 2003, 02:28:25 pm »
Ok, this is sorta stoopid but... I have used mamewah in xp before but on my new
install of XP when I run mamewah it displays in in the upper left corner and
will not display it fullscreen.  I have no idea why as this has never been a problem
in other XP installs I have done.  I thought maybe hitting alt-enter would work
like in other programs but..... alt is used in mamewah to start a game and
if you hit it, it of course, just starts the game.

Anyone got any ideas?  Its sorta pissing me off.  ;D

Is this using the default layout (Classic 640x480)?

It sounds like Windows thinks the resolution is not available, and so stays in a higher res and just displays MAMEWAH in the corner...(this occurs with the AVGA if you have a PC monitor plugged in)

It does it no matter which res I run it at.  Using the default 640x480,
using any one of the skins that used to work 1024x768 etc.  Also,
this is just a regular pc monitor.... not using arcadevga.  It doesnt seem
to even attempt to switch resolutions.

What happens if you run MAMEWAH at the same resolution as your desktop?

I haven't tried that.... although I run my desktop at 1600x1200 and i'd have to build a new layout.
I guess I can try that..... whats that going to tell ya though?

Um, not a lot to be honest.  I have no idea what the problem is though, so I guess any more info could be useful.  Maybe set your desktop res lower briefly to try it?  Don't worry if not...

What resolutions are available when you go into your display properties settings?  Have you experienced any other odd happenings with stuff that changes res?

Under display properties the adaptor page there are a ton of available resolutions. I tried it at a few of the different resolutions and each time it displays in the top left corner and doesnt change the resolution.  I have no idea why.  If I run gens or mame it will change the resolution fine and gives me no problem there so I know that it WILL change resolutions but dont know why they should be any differnet.

Its xp pro with sp1 and a nvidia gforce ti 4600 with the latest nvidia drivers. (45.23 whql)
It worked fine under win2000 with the exact same hardware.  Really bizarre huh.   In reality, i cant say it works for sure on my cab which has xp because i run the desktop at 640x480 and mamewah at 640x480 so it doesnt really have to switch, but if i was purly an xp issue i'd guess others would have the problem and you would have heard about it before.  BTW, this is with the latest mamewah beta.

One more thing..... when it installed, there were 2 files (.ocx? maybe) that it said the version i already had on my computer was newer then the ones the installer tried to put in. This prompted me if i wanted to keep the newer versions or overwrite them with the older version the installer was trying to install. I said keep the newer versions I already had.  I have no idea if this matters or not.

I really don't know what the problem is  :(

I run XP (Home) with SP1 etc., but I have an ArcadeVGA (& normal Radeon).  I have never experienced any such problems (nor heard of it before).  I wouldn't have thought XP Pro should act differently to Home in this case.

Anyone else any ideas??

I can tell you the most likely culprit.....  when you set the res, if you (or the user) have inputted an invalid refresh rate, bit rate or ect, the res change will clear, but use the next available enumeration, which might be totally different.  It's quite hard to track down, but look in those areas.

Hope that helps.   :)

Thanks Howard, that makes sense.

MrSalty:  Please bug me about this in a while if the problem persists.  I cannot look at this much atm (time), but give me a shout in a week or 2 and I can say put together a test .exe to try and track down the problem...
