The general consensus seems to be that you shouldn't feel obligated to update your romset every time there is another version release.
Keep an eye on the changelogs, and see if the new versions offer any new features or games that you'd really want to play that you couldn't before.

They seem to change so frequently, it's hard to keep up.

I'm pretty sure that even mentioning where to get ROM's is against the rules of this site. I'd suggest removing the torrent site from your original post.

For the most part I try to keep my MAME set updated at set at every major release.  IE: 141, 142, 143, etc..  I will sometimes update a an update release (IE, 141u2) if there is a game that was added between 141 and 141u2 that I want to play.

This is what I do:
1. compile new version of MAME
2. download update (140 to 141) ROMset
3. merge/rebuild into existing ROMset
4. audit newly merged set
5. connect to full torrent to share.

I also, keep the update (140 to 141) set seeded to help build ratio.

My advice, stay away from 141.  I've had nothing but compatibly problems between it, all the frontends I"ve tried it with, and my video drivers.... it crashes upon exiting games.

In fact, that leads me to wanting to roll back to an earlier version,  which version do you think is the best version (least amount of problems, uses least resources, least compatibility problems) to roll back to?

What are you doing wrong?  What version of 141 are you using? 64? UI? 32?  Are you using a version that you compiled yourself or downloaded?  You've bitched and bitched about 141 several times, yet you haven't given any real details.  I've been running 141, since they released the source, without any issues in both HyperSpin and Maximus Arcade.

I just read your edit on you other post in the FE thread.  Your issue isn't a MAME 141 issue....  The issues that you are describing have nothing to do with MAME at all.  This is definitely an issue with either your OS environment or even your hardware.  What keyboard encoder are you using? IPAC?

Dazz,

Do you want to know what YOU are doing wrong?
I'll tell you.  You should learn to talk to people the same way over the 'net as you would in person.

Try installing MameWah, which is a nice basic FE.  It's easy to install and has a nice easy menu for a cabinet.   I had some problems with other FE's (as Dazz points out), but MameWah cleaned things up for me nice.
