Trackball Y Axis problem

Using a trackball as a mouse on my desktop it works fine, but in MAME the X axis works perfectly but the Y axis stutters and jumps around and sometimes doesn't move. Any ideas as to what is causing it?

I have multiple mice enabled, controls are set up for the trackballs X and Y axis correctly as far as I can tell.
