SKG Jukebox Now Available
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:23:36 pm »
The SKG Jukebox is now out of limited beta testing and available for public consumption. This project is both an homage to, and an improvement (hopefully) to the SK Jukebox. It has many advanced features, such as:
    Improved UI, more touchscreen friendly.
Custom album lists, display only those albums you want. Perfect for families where every member has different musical tastes.
Create playlists, and play them in regular or random order.
Manipulate your track list. Change the order of tracks, move a track to the top of the list instantly, delete a track, etc.
    Integrated album art downloader.
    Integrated CD ripper.
    Track Search function.
Key mapping, map various advanced functions to custom keystrokes.

For more information, screenshots and downloads, go to www.skgsoft.net

Looking forward to your feedback

This definitely looks like exactly what I've been looking for.  I am getting an error when I try to install the .deb in Ubuntu 10.10 though. The error is as follows: Dependency is not satisfiable: liblzma1

I have been looking for a jukebox app so that I can replace the last remaining windows computer in my house which happens to be my dedicated jukebox machine with a touchscreen running Salmonking jukebox. So this is perfect.  I may try installing it in Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS).  What version of Linux have people successfully installed it in.

One thing that I didn't see in the screenshots that I am curious about is if there is some way to adjust the volume without using the keyboard?  That was one thing that was a bit annoying about salmonking jukebox that I'd love to see added to this project if possible for those of us with touchscreens.

Thanks for this great application.

Ego, thanks for the kind words. Yes, this is a new version, with an option to disable scrolling. Check out the scroll speed first, see if it works better for you.

Random, a few questions. First, is the PC you installed this on connected to the Internet? Stupid, maybe but I have to ask. Second, did the error keep you from installing the jukebox, or did it just give you an error and continue installing?

I tested the Ubuntu version on two different systems. One was a VM running 10.04, the other was a complete system running 10.10. Both were clean installs. I also installed Ubuntu restricted extras and the KDE System Settings app. The app installs and runs fine after you do that. Also, I liooked up liblzma on Ubuntu Software Center. It shows up no problem. You might want to install it first, then try to install the Jukebox.

I have the restricted extras installed, I also verified that the xz-utils package is installed which is where liblzma is installed. The computer is definitely connected to the internet.  It's the one i'm typing this on now.  Yes it kept me from installing it via the ubuntu software center when I double clicked on the deb.  I also tried installing it via dpkg on the command line and got the following errors:
Code: [Select]
Selecting previously deselected package skg-jukebox.
(Reading database ... 157589 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking skg-jukebox (from skg-jukebox_0.80_i386.deb) ...

Now apt-get is broken.  I'm now getting the following error when I try anything with apt-get:
E: The package skg-jukebox needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

I was able to fix that error by running sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq skg-jukebox

Random, it is possible the deb package was corrupted when I uploaded it to the file server, or possibly when I copied it over to my NAS. I just re-created the package, uploaded it to the server, and changed the link on the website accordingly. Download it and try it again. If you still have problems, post there, and I'll d/l the file myself tonight, and see if I can figure out what it is.

Thanks for reuploading the file.  Unfortunately it still isn't installing correctly for me on this computer.  I'll be testing it on another computer that I can load a fresh clean os install on later in the week. I will update you on my progress as I make any. :-)

Random, same error or different?  If same, did you try to install liblzma first, then the juke? If different,  what was the error?

hey mate , loaded and tested here are my findings

scrolling a lot better on animation although still too slow for my huge album collection , animation off a lot better for me , although it would be great if you could hold the left right scroll button down instead of one click to have the speed go about 10 times faster  when needed as sk jukebox does , in the last version there were keys i think it was home and end that allowed to go to the next letter ,  ie listening to acdc home went to start of b and end back to start of a i mapped these to my up down arrows on my juke  , i realise the letters on top do this but sometimes it is even quicker on my jukebox to use the up down ( mapped to home end or whatever keys are used for this function) as i have big left right up down arrows it is a lot easier and quicker , if i have to go from say b to z i use the top touch letters , although as i said in skjuke i could go from a to z in a matter of 3 or 4 seconds when button was held down , would love to see the next letter added again

still getting error reports and program shuts down randomely but tested for about 2 hours and this happened 3 times , it shuts down everytime i try to make a playlist from the configuration screen , i can make a list but when i try to add a song using the list it shuts down instant giving these messages
error report
app name skg-jukebox.exe  app ver 0.0.0.0.  mod ver 0.0.0.0.   mod name skg-jukebox.exe   offset/00007976
the following files will be included in this error report
c:/docume~1/egost~1/locals~1\temp/8d0_appcompat.txt

not sure if that helps

play random works but only plays one song then waits another 2 minutes , would be great if it played continuously after the first 2 minute wait as sometimes that is good

add album to custom list works flawlessly , strange why add playlist wont , but adding now playing track to a playlist works fine

add current playing song to playlist would be better in tracklist options as it is only one push of the tracklist not four pushes of 0 to get into options screen to add current song to playlist

no option to delete a mapped key that has been added only an option to clear all keys

track list still looks very messy , just need the song title not numbers

still reading 90% of my track numbers wrong , it goes like this

1
02-10-track title    search does not work on these tracks
03-11- track title etc

most albums with less then ten songs look like this
01
02
03 etc - search works on the tracks

looking forward to your reply , i think update 2 or 3 i had no problem with the playlist option all other versions ive always had a problem

a griffen powermate volume control knob mate , google one , it also has 4 other functions push in short push in long push in turn right and push in turn left , these can be mapped ie i push in turn right mapped to control n so it goes to next song in tracklist , it is usb driven so very easy and a great looking control knob with a excellent blue light highly reccomend

Nice catch on the Edit Playlist bug, ego. I'll fix that ASAP. There will probably be an update this weekend or next. I'm also going to look into Random's idea of a way to adjust the volume for touchscreen users. One of my design goals for this project, was that everything that needs to be done, can be done on a touchscreen. Somehow, volume adjustment fell through the cracks. I should adjust that. The 2 minute timer should probably remain for idle play, but I'll look into the idea of a continuous random play mode, something you would probably choose in the Options screen.

Somehow, volume adjustment fell through the cracks
[/quote]

;D i would of stopped it falling through the cracks if i didnt have the volume control mate haha , best thing about going public now will be the ideas and feedback on fellow jukebox program enthusiasts

glad the playlist is a bug and not something wrong with my computer or albums etc , yes i agree everything should be able to be done by touch including volume , back to my old dont need the numbers thing mate  ;D sorry but you could add a lot of options in that real estate -   ill wear you down someday ;D need to put some thought into that one maybe a option to have volume on screen or not or probably easier just to add a volume up and down in the track list options , dont think you need them onscreen , also if your running an amp your remote control takes care of this

any thoughts on the album track numbers problem? i can send a screen shot if you want , its on my computer behind my juke so i have to capture screen and then transfer to thumb drive then add to here hence why i havent added one

played again tonight for a couple of hours , with the add current  song to playlist i think the program needs to recognise what is already in the playlist and promt something like already added if you have it in there already, with large playlists sometimes your not sure if a song your hearing is already in it and you dont want doubles if possible (in saying this you might want different versions of a song or songs that have the same name like changes bowie and changes ozzy so the program needs to recognise the file and not duplicate)

the other thing once youve made a playlist of say 300 songs and i load playlist from the options screen you cant random or shuffle would be better as you can shuffle until you see a good five or six songs your in the mood for on top of the list , i know you can random a playlist as i do when i use long press on my volume knob mapped to egos playlist random , but when i load egos playlist from the options screen there is not a feature in the track list options to random or shuffle the tracklist ,

talking about playlists , a great idea would be to open the tracklist and be able to highlite any song and add them to playlist instead of waiting for the song playing so you can add now playing

still has a few freeze problems and shuts down , happened twice although i was only playing a long list so no one was scrolling etc , scrolling seemed pretty good without animation on but at times i think it was when i held the button down to scroll faster the problem occured , cant be sure of this but seemed like it did

definitely workable now though mate great work , your getting there , i think its the best juke around at the moment so much so its my main running juke program now with sk on the back burner for times if skg is a little buggy and the problems with the error problems shutting it down are happening a lot on party nights

« Reply #13 on: February 11, 2011, 10:24:00 am »
its friday night and the jukebox cranks , forgive me if i dont make too much sense as its two am and ive had a bit to drink

i added a music album to my collection . this album plays in skjuke no problem . as soon as i added the album  the program shut down, i tried this four times and same result , so i removed the album from the folders skg is picking up from and all worked , as i said there is no promlem with the album as it plays on sk juke no worries

sorry mate but after 8 hours now of playing , it is still very buggy at times especially if your scrolling etc if you stick with a list youve made there havent been too many problems , about 10 times for no apparent reason a song you had in your tracklist plalys and you  could  not hear , but the track time was ticking , i pushed space for pause and the track time stopped i pushed again and the track time started with no sound ,  when this happens it doesnt matter what song i select there is no sound , so i shut down and restart ( i know your looking at this one but takes a while to reboot the program) when i restart all songs play fine

still also a fair bit of shutdowns that say error report etc  , i cant really pinpoint why its happenting as it seems random

sometimes without the scroll animation the scrolling still is slow i might look at resizing all my albums to 300 x 300 as im thinking maybe its the album art size but that will be a big job , not slow that you can see but slow the screen  doesnt move for a second or two then moves four or five time quick for the times youve pushed the buttons or arrows, this happened in the K albums(very slow) not sure why but certain letters seem faster and some seem slower

again sorry if im not making sense but i get the best testing while having a few

the wife said the numbers are an eyesore and i didnt coax her she just said she couldnt believe you cant see that the screen isnt balanced , i hope a programmer can have a crack and make a version without the numbers , dam wish i could do it  ;D ( i know mate you like em and i accept that just trying to get someone to program a version without them or at least have them as an option ,they are so big and the do nothing

in my opinion the same goes for the letters at top of screen , id like to see just the red numbers with a black backround so it all blends in  , the white circles with the letter in the middle really draw your eye to parts of the screen that should be not so prominent , again mate just my opinion as an artist

cant wait to test the playlist options when your done working on it and any other improvements

sorry for what seems like critisism because i love this jukebox and feel a part of its growth and just want to see it become the ultimate juke program , without critisism there would be no improvements , so i encourage all the people using this program to take the time and tell skeptikal geek what is good and bad about the program

regards

ego

An update will be posted this weekend that deals with many of the issues. I've fixed the playlist screen bug, added an onscreen volume control. I also added code yesterday to deal with the issue of the song loading but not playing. I think I've fixed it, but since I never really knew what caused it, it's hard to be sure. But I did play it for several hours last night. I queued up 7 full albums in a row, and played them back to back, and it worked fine. I'll start a new thread here, once the update is available.

Same problem as Random24. I tried on Ubuntu, LinuxMint, and PinguyOS all fail the same way. The Package fails to install using both Software Center and terminal. I also tried using the rpm loading it with alien and it fails at line 168. I do have liblzma installed. This was clean installs on all three OSes and all 32 bit.

govee, Could you e-mail me some screen grabs of the errors that are being displayed when you try to install, both using the package manager and the command line? You can use the e-mail address on the websitre. Thanks.
