CONTROLS.DAT LOADING EXAMPLE!

Hello everyone. I had some spare time, so I decided to make an example of how to load the controls.dat file that will be out soon. For the controls.dat, I'm just using 3 examples that SirPoonga posted here: http://www.fe.donkeyfly.com/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=45

If anyone wants my code (its Visual Basic), just ask and i'll post it too.

Please note that to use this, change the .txt extension to .zip and extract all the files. I know its ugly, but its just a quickie example.

I thought the whole idea of the controls.dat file was to put labels with the buttons...like P1Button1: FIRE and P1Button2: JUMP, and to correct the general terms used by MAME(dial, paddle, no 2way, etc..)

It is.  With all due respect, that viewer defeats the whole purpose of the dat. Your showing the opposite of what you should show I.E you show the labels, not the "button" constants.  


However the dat's format is slowly changing over the course of the news few days, so that viewer will be deemed completely useless.  

I'm working on one in which you create your own layout and the labels are put on the correct controls. Assuming you use ctrlr files, it even adjusts for games that you changed the inputs to.

I'm very glad to see that other people intend to use it though.

Yes, as HC said the dat file has gone through a few changes in the last two days.  A dev kit with the info to develop for it once these changes have been settled on will be available.

Those examples are old, but I am leaving them up because they give an idea of what's to come.

For one, the dat wizards now support 6 players, incase xmen6 comes back working sometime.

there's a lot of interest in the concept behind the controls.dat project.  Can't wait to see some automagic FE's make use of the finished format/data

Yeah, it's a good effort.  Next week will probably show another beta of the more robust submissions system.
