Mame 0141 - Donkey Kong Jr jump sounds
« on: February 04, 2011, 04:23:01 am »
Ok, so whats the deal with DK.Jr and the jump sounds in the latest version of MAME.

I'm used to playing it in version  0102, just downloaded the latest version, and the jump sounds, sound way off.

Having never played a genuine DK.Jr I don't have anything to compare with...but it doesn't sound right to me?

Yeah it's wrong, and try mario brothers, the running sound is very annoying, literally.  I'm hoping they fix these things in 0141u2, because else I'm sticking with at least 0141 and maybe a few versions back where dkongjr had the sounds still.

Glad it's not me....it's a shocker.

Just tried 0137 and it's still the same, so it's been that way for a while.

Can't see it getting fixed soon :(

I'm hoping since the mario one is such a glaring terrible sound, they would fix it.  The whole dkong/mario games I guess are getting a complete sound overhaul to properly do the discrete audio properly.  So I'm guessing right now we are in the middle of the 'in construction' for them, but sounds like when done they will be much better than before (hopefully :D).

It takes literally seconds to go to the official bug page at http://mametesters.org, throw in a search term and see what bugs effect a searched driver, setname or another term such as "discrete".  That said, there is a logged bug for a long while time regarding the mario walk sound. (which is still missing some filters, but is mostly accurate now):
http://www.mametesters.org/view.php?id=3679

There is also the fact that in 0.141u1 there was a large c++-ification of the discrete system (as detailed in the whatsnew.txt).  There was a bug that crept in doing the conversion near the very end of the development cycle that was not observed until u1 went out.  This was observed almost immediately by someone and fixed almost as quickly, for 0.141u2:

Yeah I had searched there and didn't find it, probably since the search was for mario and that is under asteroid but mentions mario only in the description (which I guess didn't get searched through).  I figured they knew and had already fixed it.

I know the old long standing bug about the walk sound, of course this new walk sound that crept in and they fixed in that second bug report you found was definitely not even a walk sound at all :).  I didn't even realize the other games it affected, crazy.

I saw a video of a DK machine being played in the early 80s, and the Jumpman run sound seemed to me to sound just like the old MAME samples.

Has this been fixed in 141u2?  I don't know what it is supposed to sound like.  If not, what was the last version that worked?

The DK run sound is now back to what it was before 141u1.

no it has not been fixed as of .141 u4. Still sounds ridiculous. Not accurate sound emulation at all.

Also Donkey Kong is very muffled. Again, not accurate sound emulation. The old samples sounded more accurate.

I REALLY hope they get this discrete audio fixed soon!    :applaud:

I haven't heard the sound from an original board. As for the 'muffledness', apparently that's how it sounds coming from the original hardware. Whoever thinks this isn't so, should present evidence to the MAME team.
