Best Genesis games?
« on: August 20, 2003, 02:59:52 am »
I can't seem to find a set of genesis screenshots anywhere, and I don't really feel like generating them myself.

What I did for Atri 2600 was just to go through the list of games and pick out the best ones, and then I downloaded box scans for those, and only put those on my front end.

I guess I want to do the same for Genesis, but I am really not that familiar with the system outside of the Sonic series. So what are the best unique games for that console? By unique I mean games that are not on SNES, and games that do not have arcade versions.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I prefered sport games on my genesis.  Non sport games I played alot: Sonic 2, Toe Jam and Earl (great 2 player action), and columns.

Eeeks, I forgot all about the new forum. Moderators feel free to move this one.

As far as sports games go. What is the best one for each sport?

Football: Madden series
hockey:  NHPL '93 and '94.  '93 had fights and blood, '94 had one timers.
golf: PGA Championchip
I didn't have any baseball games, I play Dusty Diamond's Allstar Softball and Bases Loaded on the NES.

you can play the hockey for free on EA's website.

Other good games....

Streets Of Rage
Alien Soldier
Golden Axe
X-Men
The Lost Vikings
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Rocket Knight Adventures - by Konami, it was extremely fun and wickedly challenging. When you were 12. Ah hell, it's still fun to play and just when you think you've beat - it think again! It had some pretty nice graphics and raster effects for its day too!

Skitchin: by EA, a unique yet fun version of Road Rash on roller blades, I always liked it. Shocking by todays standards, but I always hoped for a remake...  ;)

Stuzza has a set of genesis screens, but they are not on his site currently.  I could probably hook you up with them if you are interested.

In the meantime, get your console screens here:

Hey Road Rash (1,2 & 3) itself is good too! I know you can get the ps version, but the genesis version is the classic for me

Contra Hard Corps is friggin' awesome.  I also liked the EA sports NHL games...  Sonic is pretty rad.  Ghouls and Ghosts was amazing before Mame came around.  Shinobi series was pretty cool...

You guys owe it to yourself to try "Star Control" on the Genesis.
In my opinion the best game on that system.

I also like Ms. Pac-Man on the Genesis because there is a wide assortment of wierd mazes. I just won the Genesis joystick on ebay so I can't wait to play that again.

Oh man, Star Control is one of my classics, when I was a kid we would rent that all the time, and my bro would cheese me out with the brain guy that would send out little henchmen to attack you.  I would always pick the teleportation guy though, cause he could get away from those little things.  Yah, Genesis is packed full of classics, its got its bad games, but its got its damn classics as well.  We should start making a list of like the top 100 genesis classics for people who want to get Gens and play the good stuff.  Although I dont have that kinda effort right now, maybe sometime.

M.U.S.H.A.  Awesome shooter.

Also check out the Ecco the Dolphin series and Vectorman. There was a great sports game called Powerball. Awesome head-to-head game. And all the Sonic's play great in a cabinet environment.

The unique and creative games for the Genny are what made it such a great platform to me. Well worth wading through a million ROMs to find the gems.

I bet I still have a game ratings matrix from rec.games.video here somewhere....

My favorites were "Ballz" and the 7Up "Cool Spot" games.  I also played the heck out of the 32x games "Virtua Racing" and "Shadow Squadron".

Sir Poonga, Shadow Squadron was a way better 32x game than the Star Wars.  I still enjoy playing that one.

Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

Although I only have Japanese Mega Drive games, these are my favourites. You can find a Genesis version of most titles though.
- Gunstar Heroes
- Contra: Hard Corps
- Vampire Killer (aka Castlevania Bloodlines in the Western world)
- Mega Bomberman
- Kabuki
- Dragon Crash (aka Dragon's Fury in the Western world)
- Aladdin
- The Ooze
- Thunderforce IV
- Tatsujin (aka Truxton)
- Space Invaders '91
- Super Shinobi
- Flicky
