Disable 640x480 warning in XP?
« on: August 19, 2003, 08:31:53 pm »
I've decided to try using Windows XP in my next cab, but I've run into one minor annoyance I can't work around.

I'm running in 640x480 because I've got a WG D9200 arcade monitor, but XP insists on warning me at every boot that my screen is set to a low resolution.

Anyone know of a way to disable this warning?

Here is something I found that should disable that popup from coming up:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.

2. Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3. Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.

4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.

5. Quit regedit. Log off Windows, and then log back on.

These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. Hope that works!

I'm running 640x480 on a TV w/ XP Prof and I have yet to see this warning...crazy!  It must be the ATI drivers that disable it.

I hope you can solve your problem.  XP may be a fickle beast at times, but once you get it running on your cab, you won't be sorry.

Helios:

Thanks -- I'll give that a try (I'm not certain I want to give up all notifications, but I think perhaps it might be wise to do it anyway on a cab.)

Octopus:

I'm running ATI drivers as well (the ArcadeVGA is a modified Raedon 7000), but still get the notification.

Perhaps it's because your TV is going through a TV-out port that XP is smart enough (barely) to realize that you need a 640x480 display!

I'll test things out and let you know how it goes.

Funny... I COULDNT get it to go into 640x480 at ALL!

I ended up having to tell XP that my monitor ONLY supported 640x480 (I switched between two monitors... very very annoying)...

I ended up scrapping it for 98SE.  I'm really not to sad about it.  The overhead doesn't seem to be all that useful.

Lilwolf:

If you click on the "Advanced" button in the Adapter tab, you can make it switch to 640x480. I actually use MultiRes, which makes things easier when switching between resolutions.

UPDATE:

I tried the registry hack, and it worked fine -- no more pop up warning. I do get a little red icon with an X in it that shows up in the system tray, but it vanishes after about 10 seconds.
