Street Fighter cab Marquee sketch - want opinions
« on: January 25, 2011, 03:02:55 am »

Trying to think of a name for my cabinet, a color scheme, and art-style.
I would really like to go with a simple design.  I'm not a fan of busy cabinets plastered with images.
My original idea was to have street fighter artwork, but i want something a little more original and stylized.
I was even just considering using just the hyperspin logo.
So I came up with this idea while sitting at work (Zangief is my favorite).
I may put a silhouette of 'Gief pile-driving someone at the base of the mushroom cloud, as well as silhouettes of miniature buildings in front of the letters, possibly disintegrating.
It might be a little busier than what I was planning.  Opinions?

Nice to see someone doing custom artwork around here!
I really like your SPD idea, I would go with that but ditch the building rubble idea. You were right about the business of it. Marquees should be less busy and more bold. Your cloud and title really is enough, but adding 'gief's silhouette would be cool just as a thematic element. It would also make for a cool logo idea in case you want to put it on the cab somewhere else.
If the SPD isn't readable, you could go with zangief's 2-arms in the air celebration pose, it may be simpler and more clear. But the SPD should be good.

I realize this is your initial sketch concept, but you should try not to have the mushroom cut-off at the top when you go forward on your next pass. Also, I'd try to add some shockwave or action lines eminating from the base of the cloud and stretching out toward the edges, perhaps striking through the font a bit to spruce up the explosive look. This could make it feel more "retro-artsy" too!

Looking forward to seeing your next pass!

geif at ground zero would be awesome. maybe hide "final" in the cloud?

The other suggestion I'd try to do, is add a bit of blast-damage to the Title letters near the blast.
Kind of like how that famous Nevada test footage of the house being destroyed during their test blast:

Pieces of the title letters I, C, B, U sheering away like it's about to be disintegrated would add a nice effect. It doesn't need to be a lot.

Thanks for the ideas.  I like the disintegrating letters idea.  I think I really want to try to add more perspective to the letters, and my initial idea was to have the mushroom cloud looming overhead more, like you're under it.  I'll try to re-sketch it again soon.

Ok, been a while.  But I decided I need to make my cabinet this year.  Here's a quick mock-up I made.  I still want to do the disintegrating letters, maybe give them depth like the drawing, and I have to clean up the cloud.  But I just wanted to slap something together to see if I liked it.  What do you think of the image, the idea, and the name?  Do those of you who don't get the reference still like the name?  Or is it just like "Why is that the name?".  Also- is there an accepted/standard ratio for size of width vs height on a marquee?

Just another idea that kind of goes with this.  Maybe for sideart or cp. R Mika riding a bomb like a pinup girl:

I love the reference, maybe you can sneak "final" in the cloud?  I'd maybe change the background to match the "star burst" effect when you finish with a super ?  R Mika riding a bomb is a fantastic idea

EDIT: haha I wrote "hide final in the cloud" last time I replied. That's how you know its a good idea, when you think of it twice!

The orange and yellow background is very eye-catching and the cloud in the center looks great, but not so sure about gray for the title--it seems to fade.

1. What if the background became a solid color and the current background was applied to the title like a skin?

2. What if the background pattern remains the same, but with more subdued colors and the title has the background pattern showing through, but uses the current bold background colors?  NOTE: Picture intended to show pattern, not pallette.

3. What if the same background, had the pattern showing through the title and the colors inverted?  NOTE: Picture intended to show pattern, not pallette.
