Alright who is the 3RROL 360 repair specialist here?
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:36:30 am »
I got a 360 that had the 3RROL where you turn it on and there is no audio or video and the console flash's 3 red lights.

I figured the towel trick was a myth but gave it a shot I wrapped it in a towel and turned it on for like 20 minutes shut it down for like 20 minutes then turned it on and I'll be damned it actually had worked.

console powered on the dash and everything was good threw in a game played it fo rlike 5 minutes no problem.

threw another in played it for like 15 minutes powered it down went to turn it on again this morning and awoke to 3 red light again.

I have done many console repairs but never farted with the 3 red light deal and was wondering who fix's them around here for cheap or what is the best method and tools needed to do the repair rmyself.

look at the tutorial on llama.com and dont do the "towel trick" you're killin the caps.

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

+1 with the llama.com tutorial.  I did it for a friend a few weeks ago and it's pretty simple.

I was more curious of the towel trick if anything but was amazed it actually did something somewhat lol.

I will check that tutorial out.

do the caps happen to have anything to do with it or no becuase I would not have a problem swapping them out if needed I have done plenty of circuit board work just never had the 3 red light's.

I had 3 launch console's and did the 12V fan mod and cut out the rear and did the paper board trick and they all still run flawless to date and some were ran 6+ hours straight on some days and there all still good to go so I plan to do the same to this one if I can get it going again.

nah the RRoD is most;y due to the GPU overheating. Towel trick reflows the solder but kills the caps. Xclamp replacement and new thermal paste is the best thing you can do for it.

I checked the tutorial and for some reason thought it needed a heat gun or something like that I have seen and used that tutial and also installed two of them kits already on 2 of the xbox's I had mentioned prior.

they did not have the ring of death but I did it to prevent it and it must have worked becuase all them launch console with that kit or similiar with the fan mod are still going strong.

so yeah I will grab another kit and do it to this one but what I did not know is the part where you take then fan shroud off and run it that way wich I suppose is better then a bathing towel  :laugh2:

If you're talking about intentionally overheating it and then super tightening those screws I gotta admit that seemed like a more sensible repair than waving a heat gun at the motherboard.

Actually from my experience I have had the best luck removing the old thermal paste, using a heat gun to reflow solder on GPU only, putting new paste on, replacing the Xclamps with a concoction of parts from Lowes which run about $2.50, and then doing the 12v fan mod. All other methods have worked only to have the RRoD come back after a few weeks to a month or two. What I posted above has consistently worked for me every time. (I mainly fix other people's 360s, but mine still doesn't have RRoD after almost a year)

I just hope I did not ruin it wrapping it in the towel I had it in there for about 20 minutes or so and it worked for a few minutes but I will install the x-clamp kit and give it shot without the fan shroud as llamma stated to do this time around & cross my fingers it had worked.

one last question on there parts list though:

4 x 12mm Cheese Head Screws
8 x M5 Nylon Washers
16 x M5 Steel Washers

is the 12MM the lengh of the screws or the thread width I dont want to get something too short not too long or have the threads two wide or skinny type thing..

FYI - Any fix that you do for RROD is going to be a temporary fix.  Normal X-Clamp fixes will last about 30-90 days, but will probably fail eventually.  I also had my 360 re-flowed first, which lasted only 2 months.  The non-lead solder that MS uses softens up too easily and will eventually cause the circuits under the chip to bridge, causing permanent RRODs.  The only real fix is to have the GPU/CPU re-balled using lead solder.

I've heard good things about www.knightsgamingrepair.com, so I sent my JTAG'd 360 off to them last week.  For $80 they re-balled the CPU/GPU and give a 2 year warranty.  I got an email from them Friday afternoon saying that the re-ball has been completed and the console is working as normal.  I should have it back on Wednesday. :D

I have heard the same, but the 360 I fixed has lasted a year so far and a few others I have fixed for friends are still running. I know they will fail eventually. Thanks for the info on knights gaming repair, that will be the next step for me if mine ever fails again. I am sick of messing with it.  :)

+1 On the X-clamp fix. I really can't say anything about the consoles failing again. I've fixed like 5 of them so far and the last one was last year and haven't received any complaints from the people that I fixed them for. Try it.

I have launch consoles I fixed YEARS ago that are still runnin just fine. I've fixed a ton of RRoDs in my day for others; only 1 of them didnt stay fixed.

Yea mine is still going strong after a year along with all the other I have fixed. My method has yet to fail me. Everyone always tells me they will fail again eventually no matter what. But it hasn't happened yet except for my main and that was before I did the heat gun/fan mod. When I just replaced the thermal paste and did the x-clamp fix it failed on me again after a couple of months. Then I re-did it the same way with the same results. Then I followed a guide where they used a heat gun and 12v fan mod and after that it has never failed me again.

I guess depending on the chip/version of the 360 can be a deciding factor.  I had a RROD'd Falcon & Zephyr that I did x-clamp fixes for that are still going strong.  However the fan speed were boosted to 75% and they have been going for over a year now.  Without the fan mod I've had several x-clamp mods re-fail usually within 6 months.

However, I have not yet come across an older Xenon where the x-clamp fix lasted longer than 6 months.

I had RRoD on my 6th month old jasper, and it also made the fans sound like a hairdryer.

Turned out it was the power brick and after a delayed power cycle - works without a fault.

Any clue why that happened?
