Donkey Kong Roms Question - Is this the correct version???
« on: January 19, 2011, 09:08:55 pm »
Trying to improve on Donkey Kong by playing on my MAME cabinet and wondering which version of the Roms is the "correct rom" version. In other words, the one that is played to earn the world record.

http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=2&gi=3852&vi=22

I've played both "US Set 1" and "US Set 2" versions and, in my opinion, they play quite differently - especially around the 100,000 point levels an up. Two of the boards (the rivet and pie factory levels) seem to play quite a bit differently. I score about 100,000 points higher on the US set 1 version but when I watch videos of Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell play on youtube the game seems to play more like the US Set 2 version.

So, long rambling aside - here is my question...Which Rom version of Donkey Kong is the one that is played for the world record?

Interesting question.

I played on the World Famous Donkey Kong at Funspot and I have to tell you that machine is harder than the MAME version.

Playing on MAME did prepare me, but I don't think that MAME is a total match.

Dunno if this is helpful, but the only Donkey Kong set Twin Galaxies has for MAME is US Set 1.

I think MAME is usually harder than my dedicated machine...I seem to get a lot more wild barrels.

Set 1 is the one to use. Set 2 was the original before they fixed it so you can't hide on the ladders.

As a general rule, use Set 1 or the latest REV.

my understanding is that Us set 2 is the rom dump from original 4 board set, and that US set 1 is from the second 2 board rom dump
the 2 board set is the one used by TG for High Scores, so you should be using the US set 1 rom in mame to practice

I have a dedicaded DK (2 board set) and I've played the one at funstop many times (the sprites wern't functioning on it the last time I was there about a montha ago though :'() and find the US set 1 version in MAME to be identical and Ive gotten up to around 300,000 on all three machines
I do find set 2 to be a little easier too, but I don't play that one much

Bender, Paul and all...Thanks a million for the help. I'm sure now that US set 1 is the right rom to use. Thanks again and if I ever break the WR I'll let give you all the credit (my current score is 300k+ so a way to go...).
