Toshiba Satellite pro - wireless issue
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:46:09 am »
We all were out of school (no, I ain't no english teacher :D)  for a week, and before we left both Toshibas would connect to the internet.

Now I've got one that cannot find the network, and tells me the wireless Toshiba  LAN Mini PCI card is unavailable / disconnected. It actually came back up for a few minutes, but immediately crashed and burned again.

Is there a way to fix this without taking the thing apart? In all likelihood you may need more info - tell me what and I'll provide it.  Going to continue to try and figure out the issue from this end as well - because the one I'm typing to you on is the same model.

Thanks!

Most toshiba satellite's that i've seen have a switch that enables/disables the wireless card. Double check that. That switch might be going bad causing it to show to the system as unavailable.

Sometimes it's not a physical switch, but a soft-switch (fn-key + something). That'd be a different scenario.

On the bottom of the laptop there'll be a model number. It will help if you can post that since it'll give us a better idea of possible physical issues.

There's also the chance that the wireless card has simply gone bad due to a power surge while you were away. The card itself will probably be pretty easy to replace from a hatch on the bottom, if that comes to bear.

Hey Cot, just thought about needing to add that mod6el number - its a Toshiba Sattelite Pro 6100; serial
82102623P.

The crazy thing is that when I use the device driver feature, it will tell me the device is working properly.

I can't really go into details here, but it is possible that if its a function switch, it could have been knocked off; the power surge is equally likely.

I'll check - the frustrating part if it is hardware is that we really don't have the funds to replace the card - but that being said, it's nice to know it's a relatively easy fix. :)

Did some reading up on this and went back to device manager (this is where you can enable and disable the hardward, of course, for this PC).  Weird, but when I "disabled" then immediately "enabled" it, it worked!  Same thing must be done if I power it down, but at least I know how to get the internet to work on it again!

YAY! We have our fifth computer in the lab (and much needed) working again!
