TinyXP installation problems
« on: January 08, 2011, 11:22:22 am »
Hi everybody,

Like so many of you I've opted for a modified version of XP for my dedicated MAME pc. TinyXP seemed like a great candidate and I found a download of the "rev09" edition. That was nearly a week ago, and I'm still nowhere... I've been reading up on the subject all I can, but for some funny reason, every guide/tutorial seems to start with the words "take your TinyXP bootcd", which I obviously don't have... Below is a picture of the tinyxp directory. This is what I've downloaded, a whopping 4gigs...

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/2803/tinyxpfail.jpg

I already tried to burn the "bootcd" directory onto a cd, but the pc starts up to windows xp as normal (even though I switched the boot device to the CD drive).

After some more reasearch I found out that the installation involves something with a .iso file and that you need a program to read/burn that filetype. So I went ahead and downloaded powerISO. I opened powerISO and added the "TinyXP-Rev09" .iso file to the program and burned it to a cd. Again I tried to boot the pc with that cd in it as first boot device, and again the pc just started up into normal windows xp.

I'm losing it here guys, one try away from throwing everything out the window... What am I doing wrong, and more importantly, how do I do it right? :s

You're not suppose to burn the .iso as a file to the disc, you need to burn it as an image:

This program works pretty well. PowerISO can be a little confusing.

Also TinyXP is up to like rev 12 now I think.

Thnx for pointing me in the right direction! So it's just the ISO that I have to convert into an image and then burn that image to a dics?

Read the info provided by gryhnd.  In short do not convert the iso just burn the iso to a disk.

The iso is the image.  You can use Astroburn to burn it and itll run fine...

Also why are you using Rev09 when you could use Rev11?  11has a lot of new security fixes that werent in 09

There's an assumption by authors of these kinds of things that booting, disc images, etc are known by those attempting use.

I also suggest using version 11. It is up to date, and is just under 700mb.

Yea, I know this is going to sound rude, but if you dont know how to burn and boot off an iso then you should probably learn more about PCs before trying to use hacked OSes.

Well to his credit, what he's doing probably is one of the best ways to learn.

i have to agree.  thats how i learn.. just dove in.  i can remember the first time i installed linux back in the early 90s. hah, took a 6 pack of beer and lots of luck your hardware would be supported..  i remember buying a new p166 with 32 megs of ram, 2 gig hard drive and a 8meg video card.. oo it was top of the line for a home pc at the time..  but i had to down grade to a 2meg trident video card to get X working.. ooo them are the good times.  good luck with your new os.
