Getting Ready to Connect to a Wells-Gardner 19K7602
« on: January 04, 2011, 03:50:11 pm »
After having built my first cabinet (with a TV inside) and giving it away, I'm ready to try again with an arcade monitor. I found an old Bad Dudes vs. Dragonninja cabinet for $50 with the aforementioned Wells-Gardner 19K7602 inside. I've got it cleaned out, and am getting ready to take out the JAMMA boards, but I had a few questions that weren't answered by what I've read:

1.) Do most people leave the original arcade power supply in the cabinet and plug it into the surge protector used to power the PC? Is this actually an option, or is it just a fire hazard?
2.) I'm assuming I have a model 19" model K7602 monitor, is that correct?
3.) I'm planning on getting an ArcadeVGA to plug my PC to the monitor, but I've also read about Soft-15KHz, which I'm thinking about. Either way, I'd need a breakout cable from the VGA output on the video card to match the input on the monitor, correct?

I think that's it for now, thanks for the continued help!

Okay, I've done some more reading and still have a few questions. This is what I'm working with right now, I've done a bit of cleaning but left everything in the cabinet:

I'm planning on buying an ArcadeVGA card, and using the Ultrastick 360 sticks to connect the buttons to the PC. I'm planning on taking out the JAMMA board and the speakers, and then adding a power strip and plugging the monitor's power supply into that. Is there anything I should know about doing this? Is that a bad idea, or is there a better way?

That is definitely a K7000 series monitor. The specific model should be on one of those white labels stuck on the right side of the metal frame.

If you follow the power cord from the monitor down to the bottom of the cabinet you will find that it leads to that transformer, that is called an isolation transformer. You will need to keep the monitor connected to that transformer. AC power goes in one side and monitor power out is on the other side. So you will have to power that transformer either by wiring a plug to it in order to plug into your power strip or vice versa, wire your power strip into the original cabinet wiring in order for everything to come on with the factory cabinet switch.

You will indeed need a VGA breakout cable to go from your PC to the monitor whether you use an ArcadeVGA card or not. You can either buy a premade one or make your own. I would recommend just buying one and be done with it, otherwise you will have to buy all the proper connectors and such in order to properly connect to the monitors header pins.
You can get one from Ultimarc - http://www.ultimarc.com/JShopServer/section.php?xSec=11

Awesome, thanks for the help!

I got the ArcadeVGA and cable today, and got them hooked up. Things were looking good, except that the video was upside down. I did a bit of research and it looked like I needed to flip the vertical yoke. I read that that's generally the yellow/green cable, so I flipped those... and the picture is no longer upside down, but is now reversed, as in the words read from right to left and are backwards, if that makes sense. Do I need to flip the other yoke cable as well? The four cables weren't connected, they were split in 2 and 2, so maybe somebody has messed with them before? Also, I don't have an ohmometer (probably a mistake), so when I flipped the yellow and green the screen started out garbled before fixing itself. Is this a problem?

Yes, just flip the other pair of yoke wires to fix the backwards-ness.

You may have to adjust the 50/60Hz pot or the Horizontal Hold pot a bit if the scrambled screen becomes a big issue. Shouldn't be anything major.

Awesome, will give that shot. Not really a big deal, if it works, but what could have caused this? The monitor was displaying correctly when running Bad Dudes from the JAMMA board...

Theres the vertical and horizontal yokes. when flipping one you must also flip the other to keep everything correct

What he said.....swap them both. And make *damn* sure you don't get the wires mixed up and short the vert to the horiz.....smoke will billow if you do and you'll have a nice doorstop.
Some games put out an inverted image.....its common to have to swap the yoke wires during a conversion. 'Specially if yer using a monitor out of a game that used the monitor facing up and a mirror to display the image (Lethal Enforcers and the like).

Don't even think about using the game's pwr supply to pwr a PC.....it won't do it.

And.....I'd unhook the AC input to the existing game pwr supply. It won't regulate without a load and it'll just sit there trying to start up repeatedly. Not real good for it.....
