Monitors at the Dump?
« on: January 03, 2011, 04:45:31 pm »
Not sure how it works around you,
But for me, people dropoff old CRT Computer monitors and televisions all the time at our local dump/recycling center.  PC's too,  but only interested in Monitors at this time.  They generally don't encourage garbage picking, but I have to make some trips over the next few weekends and will take a look while I am there.  Figure post holiday there should be a few folks dumping their old sets.

Anyone acquire any usuable equipment this way?  Just tossing out as an idea if anyone is looking.  ::)

before i moved to the big city, the small town dump where i lived actually had a reuse center there. if you had items that where still usable/serviceable you could drop them off there for no charge. I picked up computers, tv's, a home audio reciever, dvd players. all sorts of things for free. not to mention got rid of lots of stuff i didn't need anymore.

in the big city here, they just have a giant bin you back up to and shovel your refuse into. no sorting, no nothing, everything gets tossed. when the bin gets full, they drag it of with a loader. and drag a new one into it's place. no access to the grounds at all.

I have on the other hand driven though back alleys behind apartments and townhouses... the residents will often leave items like tv's and computers out of the dumpsters so people can grab them. so not all is lost. especially this time of year (x-mas) and spring cleaning time... seem to be able to get some pretty good stuff at those times.

some days before x mas i went to the local dump . i had some stuff 2 get rid off and wanted to check for a degaussing coil for a philips arcade tube i bought brandnew via ebay a year ago . the idea was to rip a broken tv for replacement . i picked a tv set of the same size . i know grundig used philips tubes for maybe 30 years , but couldnt look inside it.  before entering the junkyard i allways remind myself not 2 grab and take anything back home  , but as usually i couldnt resist. btw. the philips tube is 100 % identical to those used in a very common german universal cab. and guess what .. the tv set is workking perfekt .... naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa .... it would be a waste to be ripped apart. hm ..maybe i have to do another pass on the electronic junkcontainers , armed with screwdrivers and led torch . man , i ve allready stored around 5o crt tv sets and computer monitors , but cant bring in anymore arcadedump. it should to be sufficient for 100 years of arcade hobby .
