Help with soft 15 kHz
« on: January 02, 2011, 08:47:46 pm »
Hey all, again, I hope that the community will be able to help me.

Though I would start a new thread for this one.

Here is what I have for CPU and hardware:

Biostar 890 GXB mobo
AMD Quadcore
ATI Radeon 4250 HD on board graphics
Catalyst
         Driver Packaging Version   8.70-100113a-095110C
         2D Driver Version   6.14.10.7050
         Direct3D Version   6.14.10.0728
         OpenGL Version   6.14.10.9405
         Catalyst™ Control Center Version   2010.0113.2208.39662
Soft 15 - build 50
Nieman 24.5" monitor
MAME 0.140

Long story on how I got here, private email me if you want more or check the Win7 64 thread I have on this board.

I have a stable picture running at 640 x 480, however, once I command line MAME in games, when MAME automatically switches the res, I get rolling screens or worse.

Once in MAME game, I adjust with vertical hold, which screws the desktop up, among other things.

I have attached a few pics of various games (Brubber, Lady Bug, Mappy, Mario Bros). I adjusted hold for Mappy (no reason, just the first one I picked).

Let me know what other info is needed, I will do my best to supply it.

Thank You very much.

Eric

Since the feedback here has been poor, maybe you should try the dedicated soft 15 khz thread?

In my own experience, soft 15 khz works seamlessly with my current setup, which I use mainly to run classic games:

p4 MSI mobo - 2.4 ghz
1 gb ram
ati radeon 4700

After soft 15 khz kicks in, and setting the resolution to 640 x 480 with quickres, I only need to tweak the settings in mame a bit.

Best of luck!

I use soft15khz with mame. If you have a working 480i desktop display, then using mame with the -noswitchres option should work..

- all vertical games  must run with the -noswitchres option, unless they are rotated,
- most horizontal games should be able to switch to their native res. some , like Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, or R-type won't display on a 15khz monitor in their native res. something to do with trading a lower refresh rate for more lines of res. ( maybe one of the resident Gurus can explain this better )

I ended up making 2 wheels in hyperspin, one for vertical games, which calls mame with the -noswitchres option, and another wheel for horiz games, which calls mame with the -switchres option. When i come across an horizontal game that needs the noswitchres option, i  just add a config file for that game in the mame directory.

Hope this help
