DAPHNE question. Almost Off Topic
« on: August 17, 2003, 10:07:42 pm »
I cannot access the Daphne forum/messageboard , so I'll give it a shot here.  Sorry.

I managed to install Daphne, but after I die I move on to the next scene.  According to the Daphne site, this is correct.  And I quote:
=====================
Q: When I die in Dragon's Lair, I move to a new scene instead of playing the same scene over again. Why?

A: This is how the original arcade worked, whether you remember it that way or not :) It was a design decision implemented by the programmers. We can only speculate about their reasons.
======================

Frankly, I don't rememner this being the case.  Either way, the DVD-Video version of DL that I own certainly doesn't allow you to continue if you die.   Who's right?

"3 warps to Uranus" -- so I stopped playing!

they are right...

but are you describing the behavior in the dvd rom correctly?

it sounds like you are in agreement with yourself (and the daphne faq) if you DVD rom doesn't let you continue...

when I play DL via daphne I get a new random scene each time (if I die) which is what I expect...

*shrug* are their dip switch setttings that let you change the behavior at all?

Rampy:

In Daphne, when you die, you lose a life but continue to the next scene
In Digital Leisure's DVD-Video version of DL, when you die you keep on playing the exact same scene until you pass it correctly.

I don't think I am in agreement with myself  ???

I didn't mean to nitpick, but I didn't understand what you meant.  in the above statement you are saying it certainly DOESN;T allow you to continue if you die...

I dunno... the faq is correct as far as I'm concerned...

*Shrug*

maybe it's just semantics... on what you mean by continuing...

Yup.. I'm saying t DOES NOT allow you to continue if you die.... i.e., if you die, you do not continue on to next level.  (that's what I mean by 'continue')

ah... ok.

Well maybe we should say that the DVD rom "plays" sequentially where as the arcade game plays the scenes semi-randomly

*shrug* If it's the DVD disk type that goes into your DVD player -- i imagine that might be a conscience decision due to the limitations of home video DVD-video players (if it's the DVD-ROM version --> I dunno, i'm out of ideas).

That's interesting.  You're probably right, in that the Home DVD-Player version cannot do random access to scneces.  (no such thing in DVD player spec, AFAIK).

Anyhow, are you now also telling me that the original arcade version played scenes RANDOMLY?!

If you died in the arcade you would automatically go to the next scene.  If you managed to make it through most of the 32 (I think) scenes before the dragon then you would have to replay the scenes you screwed up the first time around.  So it's like this

-entrance and random 8 scenes
-falling platform
-random 8 scenes (that you haven't played yet)
-falling platform
-final 8 scenes + any you need to repeat
-dragons lair

Go to....

http://www.d-l-p.com/tech/docs/sequence.asp

It shows how the arcade game goes through the sequence of screens.
It's slightly different depending on what romsets are used I think.....

Anyways, its very detailed.
