Collegiate MAME Arcade
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:23:58 am »
Hello fellow board members!!

I've been into the whole MAME scene since high school (around 2004) but have not been involved in the forum boards. My current project that I am nearing completion on is my latest and greatest creation. I started with a full size cardboard mockup which really helped when it came to getting the dimensions and feel of the cabinet correct before cutting into any real material. I have Markc74 and his Terminus arcade seen here - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=92156.0 to thank for the initial idea for the design. I decided at the request of the customer to modify the cabinet to be a 4 player and I think it looks very good this way. This arcade has many products and features from some of the best parts providers we all know including, but not limited to the following,

- Ultimarc

  - Mag-stik Plus
  - U-trak
  - Ipac 4

- Paradise Arcade Shop

  - IL clear translucent push buttons
  - RGB led chip boards

- Groovygamegear.com

  - LED Wiz
  - Various other hardware parts

- Reliable Hardware

  - speaker grills

Other items include

  - Logitech 5.1 z5500 surround sound

Here is a link to the photobucket of the build thus far, I will post many more pictures soon! Please comment/ask any questions you may have!

Here's a picture of the arcade mostly finished now. Yay! We were trying out the LED's and got them dancing to music via LED Blinky, VERY cool. We are putting in a new computer with a lot more balls. Current computer is a Dell P4 with 1.25gb ram. New computer is an Asus with a AMD x6 processor, 8gb ram and 1gb video. One question I have is, does LED Blinky get less glitchy with a better computer??

Nice subwoofer in that cab!

Blinky should run better, but I'm surprised it'd be glitchy if you were just playing music at the time.

If you're loading the machine down with a 3d game or something, AND trying to drive all the lights based on sound then, yeah, I could see it getting glitchy on a low end machine in that case.

What made you decide on the Logitech 5.1 z5500? Did research lead you to believe it was an all around great value, or maybe you had previous experience with it? I know I don't need to ask I'm sure it sounds great, just curious with all the options out there...

Great looking cab, congrats!

Sorry for the confusion but led blinky wasn't glitchy with the music, it was glitchy with hyperspin. I think the sub turned out good as well, I am going to add light around the sub that goes to the music. Maybe RGB if I feel crazy.

I've had a Logitech z5500 for several years that I got while I was in college. It was crazy loud and super rich. It was also a great value as I had purchased a refurbished unit off eBay for under $200 if I recall correctly. I loved how it was made for a computer despite being able to hook it to whatever you want via optical. This is the third z5500 set I have bought the other two being in my living room and my bedroom. The self-powered sub made for minimal space needed when it came to putting one in the arcade as well.
