Newbie with monitor problems.
« on: December 17, 2010, 11:33:10 am »
What's up guys! I recently got a free candy cab with a 4 slot neo geo board and 2 cartridges. The previous owner told me to check the monitor, which I did. When I plug the monitor it makes a hissing sound. I really don't know what to do. I know how to discharge a monitor and I have tools to do that so can you help me? Here's some pics of the monitor:

Free Candy Cab ?  :o  Some people have all the luck  ;D  I am looking to buy one for a reasonable price but can't .... monitor or not.

I'm no monitor repair expert, but high pitched noises are typically associated with a bad FBT.

Hey Codecracker! Yeah I guess I got kinda lucky hehehe but I'm still stucked at the monitor. If I'm going to replace the flyback, do I need to look for a specific model or number?

where is the hissing coming from, normally its from the anode cap which denotes the monitor being damp
make sure the neck is not cracked
is it actually coming on at all,do you get an orange glow from the heaters in the neck card,do you get static on the screen

The neck is not cracked that I can see, the monitor sort of turns on with little static and yes the neck has some glow.

on the flyback transformer next to the focus
adjust slowly clockwise to see if you get a white raster(if no video signal connected)

no video signal, the hissing is probably sync whistle due to the fact there is no sync
now you need to check your power supply is functioning correctly using a multimeter to read the +5 and +12

set meter to dc volts 20v range
black probe to pin 1 of the jamma edge connector and red probe to pin 4
should read 5.05 to 5.10 volts

a simple fault finding process for vids is to power on and press service switch or insert a coin then press start,if you get sounds then likely the monitor is faulty if not then likely power supply or game board
then you go onto reading psu voltages and turning up the screen volts to id exactly where the fault lies-should take less than 1 minute to fault find a vid
been doing this process since i started working on amusement machines way back in 86

you need to read at the jamma edge connector-where the game board plugs in
pins 1 and 4 you want

grant: On a sidenote, we checked the pins on the jamma connector and traced them to the monitor chassis and saw that there wasn't any cable connected on pin 1. There are 6 pins right?

i am not sure what you are doing, there is no reason to read the video signal lines.
there are normally 5 pins for video input red/green/blue/video ground/sync

Yeah but the monitor isn't plugged to the psu... and the monitor is still showing the horizontal lines, is that ok??

the psu supplies the voltages to the game board and few other optional items
the monitor is powered either via a stepdown/isolation transformer or direct from the mains depending on type
if the monitor powers on but you only get a whitish screen with the screen volts turned up then 99.9% of the time it means the game board is not outputting a video signal
for the game board not to output a video signal most of the time it means the power supply that runs the game board is knackered-also a knackered game board will cause these issues
impossible to prove unless you have a multimeter

those lines you see are called flyback lines

it should be made law that all video machine owners buy a multimeter

feeling brave?
get a 12v halogen bulb and stick across pins1 and 3 on the jamma connector
disconnect the game board first

well that probably proves you have +5 volts but proves little else
you will need that multimeter to read +12 as well
do you have a spare game board you could try?
also some photos of the wiring from monitor to game board etc would help

the voltages are correct
try a different game board, remember neo 4 slot are not jamma so any jamma board you test make sure you remove the speaker wires first
