AAE Saving Scores
« on: December 14, 2010, 10:10:36 am »
Hello people. I'ved been fallowing several AAE threads, it seems that we got to a point were we are stucked.
It seems that migrating AAE software to MAME is more complex that waht it seemed.
Its a pity that emulation in AAE i so much better than MAME. I think most of you guys agree on this.
Wish I new programming so I could help, but I'm null with it. Just want to give an impulse so this project doesn't die.
By the way, has any been able to save scores in AAE???

cheers people!

Unfortunatley, I think AAE has hit a dead end. And I don't think that the shader will ever be picked up in mame. My big thing is getting the Tempest Multigame rom (tempestm) to run in anything other than AAE or Tempest GL. I have not tried the newest available version of misfitmame yet, but version .95 did NOT work.
I wish there was a work around to get tempestm to play in macmame...

Highscore save works for me in many AAE games, but NOT in Asteroids, which is a shame. :-)
It worked automaically, I did not have to do anything.

Cheers...

Eventually there will be a re-release of aae, with many things fixed. Keep watching!

That is great news. If you need beta testers.....

In the meantime, do you have a copy, beta as it may be, of AAE with working joystick controls that one could play with? You mentioned a wip build a while back but I never saw anything.  I'd love to use AAE with my Star Wars Yoke.

Thanks.

A new version of AAE on the way??
That's a dream come true!

I just did a special version of AAE just for Asteroids. Hiscore save for Asteroids partly works in AAE with Update1, but NOT in AAE with Update2, so I made a special stripped version of AAE with Update1 only. Also added some other changes. One problem is still unsolved: After 25 minutes of playtime, the screen gets black and you cannot play anymore. That's tested on both of my PCs.

But I hope all this gets obsolete if Mr. AAE releases a new version. Pleeeeease.  :applaud:

Btw Joystick lovers: Check http://joytokey.webs.com
It works very well with AAE (Just for digital joystick of course).

Cheers

AsteroidsAAE
V0.1 March 2011

AsteroidsAAE is mainly AAE (Another Arcade Emulator) with Update1 and
stipped down for just emulating Asteroids. AAE Update2 is not included
cause Asteroids Hiscore Save is broken here (although it works in
Asteroids Deluxe and many other games). Also check:
http://pages.suddenlink.net/aae

To play, copy the roms ("asteroid.zip", also used in AAE and MAME) into
the roms folder. Then open "asteroids.bat". You probably want to correct
the video settings. Press TAB to enter the menu. For joystick support,
JoyToKey is a good choice. Download it here:
http://joytokey.webs.com

What I did other than stipping AAE down was the following:
- Even with only Update1 installed, Hiscore Save only worked until
somebody accidently pressed Reset (F3) or test mode (F2). I completely
deactivated both of these buttons. They are useless anyway IMHO.
- I integrated a different Sound Sample Set with 8 bits instead of 16
bits. It produced less crackling on both of my PCs and also sounds
more realistic IMHO.
- I made the shoots a bit brighter and sharper.
- I made an Asteroids icon to stay on your desktop. :-)

Known issues:
- The screen goes black after 25 minutes. So you only have 25 minutes to
break the highscore. I don't have a solution for this. If you know
something about it, please email me.

I know this is a dirty hack. But I'm not a programmer and this is the best
I can do. At the moment it's the best way to emulate Asteroids on a PC
IMHO.
- Standard AAE seems to be a dead project although it has lots of fans
including me. The sourcecode was published in 2010 but nobody does
something with it as far as i know .
http://mirrors.arcadecontrols.com/aae/
- AsteroidsGL from 2005 was nice back then, but is not updated anymore.
- The MAME team seems to be not willing to update their very outdated
vector rendering code. And, strange enough, there seem to be no MAME hacks
with a better vector rendering flying around in the net. If you know something
about it, please tell me!

AsteroidsAAE is mainly tested on:
- Penitum 4/WinXP-SP3/Geforce 6600 AGP/Extrabright hand tuned IBM CRT-
Monitor 13" from 1989, 640x480
- Core2Quad/Win7/Geforce 250 PEG/Dell 27" IPS-LCD 1920x1200

Have fun...

HOOORAY!!!!
Tim, my complete, configured AAE rig is sitting and waiting to go. Please let me know when you decide to beta test/re-release so we can get AAE up and going again! The big thing that was impeding my progress was constant crashes from graphics card driver issues, I can't recall everything right now but AAE would lock up on me intermittenly after running about 20-30 minutes. There was another mouse bug issue when I would boot directly to AAE when I started my rig.

Hello everybody,
please check this thread
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=110173.0
for more about my little AsteroidsAAE thingie.

And Mr. AAE (is your name TIM?), would you PLEASE tell us something about the "screen goes black after 25 minutes and on again after another 25 minutes"-problem?

Thanks a million times in advance....

I suggest waiting without asking. Ardence can easily be perceived as pestering.
