'Clean' rom list - generating or manually making my own?
« on: December 09, 2010, 06:56:17 pm »
Hello! First post here, sorry if I'm in the wrong section.

I've been wracking my brains about this for weeks now, searched for ages and been to loads of what seem to be dead websites with no answers to be found!

I'm using the latest version of mame and also the latest version of Mamewah as my front end. My issue is with how Mamewah displays game titles.

Many roms have redundant (to me) information in brackets such as cabinet type, number of players, things like that. I've done my best to physically delete clones and foreign versions of roms that I don't have a use for, so the list is much cleaner now than it used to be. But for an example, Out Run shows as Out Run (sitdown / upright, Rev B) - the bit in brackets being the bit I'd like to remove.

It's easy for me, in Mamewah, to go into the .lst file that was generated through the front end, and manually edit the titles of the games. Problem with this solution is that if I ever make changes to my roms (adding, removing etc) then Mamewah needs to re-generate the list. This then pulls all of the rom information from somewhere else (see below about my confusion on that) and of course all of the original titles are now back again, not good!

If I knew where this default list of game information was on my system, I'd go into that and edit them from the source. I really wouldn't mind going through each rom in a text file if thats what it took to finally get this sorted. But I'm confused on the details.. Mamewah by default was set up to use rom_folder_vs_listxml for its list generation method - although I never created an xml file for it to use, and a search of my mame/mamewah directory comes up blank for xml files, so I honestly have no idea where it's getting the information from!

I've generated an xml file from the mame command line since all of this, but Mamewah seems to ignore it anyway.

Long post over, sorry  ;D Hope somebody can help!

One Word: RomLister
http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/

RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE AS:
You'll need the Controls file: http://www.puttheglasseson.com/downloads/mame/romlister/data/controls.xml
And you need the NPlayers file:  http://www.puttheglasseson.com/downloads/mame/romlister/data/nplayers.ini
And this one too.  Catver file: http://www.puttheglasseson.com/downloads/mame/romlister/data/Catver.ini

Romlister will pull its own Mame.xml and you can make your own RomScan and Merged files, but here is my merged file with a complete rom set at 140u1
http://www.puttheglasseson.com/downloads/mame/romlister/data/merge140u1.xml

ALSO  your rom names dont sound like that are matching the naming convention.  you should try downloading a fresh set.

I think I love you.  :applaud:

I wish I'd have signed up here earlier, would have saved me a lot of trouble! And, looking at the batch tutorials for this program... it would have saved me at least 4 days of sitting, scrolling individually through each game, making a list of ones I want to get rid of and then manually deleting them  :censored:

Thanks very much  :D
