The American
« on: November 26, 2010, 12:21:33 am »
Saw this movie last week. I try to see anything George Clooney is in. I was a bit dissappointed, and for the first time, I think I'll have to use the 'spoiler alert' thingo to elaborate:

The problem I had is this. Most thrillers are supposed to keep the audience guessing, that's part of the fun. This movie, you could see almost straight away that someone is out to get 'the American' and that it is obviously the guy he works for. This must be deliberate because I am no PBJ: I can't usually tell what the ending is going to be in the first five minutes  ;D . Therefore that must be how this movie is intended to be. Perhaps the fun is watching for the penny to drop in Clooneys character. I don't know. Then there were the mysterious Swedes, who are after him. they obviously aren't hired by Clooneys boss, because the woman he is getting a rifle for is definitely not in the know. And there can't be irony from the fact that she later tries to kill him with that same rifle, because she could have done it way before. ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, if you wanted to get rid of him, just send him a letter bomb!
Maybe the story is supposed to be more about our lone pensive assassin, reflecting on what a hollow life he's led, or summink. I did appreciate that in the end, he finally meets someone he can live the rest of his life with, only to be cruelly snatched away. Reminded me of his character in 'Up in the air' actually. Just a bit

The acting itself was great, as were the locations, in old Italian villages and towns. And I think the directing was great too. Just that the story didn't do it for me. This movie has had rave reviews, so maybe it's just me  :dunno

Heh, thanks for the shout out in your review.   ;D

You are a crucial part of my reasoning when it comes to reviewing a movie. I always ask myself "How long would it take for PBJ to work out?"  :D
