Setting it up
« on: November 24, 2010, 05:45:44 pm »
Hi there,

I'm just about to finish my frontend/emulator setup, and am almost ready to transfer it to my cab-computer. How exactly does this work? Do you just copy the whole setup to the cab-computer and strip down XP manually from there? Or do you fresh install a stripped version of XP and then add the setup in some way? And ifso, what are my options there?

Thanks!!

I used a disk-cloning utility (in my case I used Seagate Disk Clone.....but it requires a Seagate HDD to use). On an earlier install I started from scratch, but found that some of my mappings were wrong and it was a pain to re-check them. Disk cloning removes any risks of something not copying over properly - you know that everything will be exactly the same.

Good luck with it.

instead of setting it up on one pc to move to another, why not set it up on your cab pc from scratch???

Because it isn't capable of getting on the internet for one, and secondly, I didn't really feel like going through all that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- standing up in front of a cab fiddling with an ancient P4 computer.

There's the answer to your question, have you got one for mine? ;)

Is mame on a separate drive or is it on the main drive of your setup machine?   If it is on the windows drive it will not work to clone the whole drive to move it over as windows will not be setup correctly for your old P4 computer.  If it is on a separate data drive cloning will work just great.

I made one huge directory with everything in it: Hyperspin, all the emulators, all the roms, all the artwork (still working on that). My Windows drives on the P4 are completely clean. I just formatted the whole thing.

I was just looking around on google and found "tinyXP". Is that a good option? Are there others to consider? And once I got the OS installed, how do I get my frontend Hyperspin to launch on startup? And how do I hide windows completely?

Thanks, that's just what I needed ;). 2 questions though:

1) Does this work on a fresh install of windows XP? It says you need service packs and whatnot. My MAME computer doesn't have network access, so downloading service packs is going to be a pain...

2) Would this work on TinyXP?

getting tinyxp running on my MAMEpc would take me a couple hours probably the way things are stocked now. Better safe then sorry :).

i know that people have recommended cloning and all but..

I imagine both of your computers have the main drive labaled "C" drive

just make sure it's in the same location on the cab computer as the old computer

so if you have it as C/windows/users/shateredsoul/desktop/games/etcetc

then just copy your games folder to that same exact spot, I'm creating a game collection for my little cousin so I made everying in c/hyperspin

that way hopefully I can just copy it over to his pc when I see him during xmas.
