32" 720p lcd for a cabinet
« on: November 24, 2010, 04:55:07 pm »
This sounds kind of retarded, but i need something flat for my new cab and don't want to spend much.  I was wondering if anyone ever played a cab with a large 720p lcd if it felt awkward or too pixelated upclose.  Im looking at this one.

It won't be unplayable at all, but yes it will look significantly more pixelated than if you were using a true arcade monitor.  Of course you can use filters to compensate for this, but it results in an image that is less accurate.

You can easily test how you like this by simply running MAME on your desktop pc in 1360x768 and play around with the display options in MAME to see how you like it.

But there is a bonus to having an HDTV in the cab.  You can experience new arcade games in their intended res and aspect ratio.  If you're a fan of fighting games this is a very good thing.

a 32 is not unheard of, i replaced a monitor in a golden tee cabinet with a 26 and it turned out really good.

its actually a LCD TV, it has a VGA input. it stretches the image a little since it's 16:9 instead of 4:3 but it's not really noticeable. it seems the images from the game are a little squashed to begin with, so stretching it a little actually "fixes" it. it's not perfect, but it certainly works.
