Wii and Emulators
« on: November 14, 2010, 10:25:51 am »
Im currently have a wii modded by following this link: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/16970-new-3-1-4-1-softmod-any-wii.html

I can play backups using neogamma and they all work fine.
I also have the homebrew channel installed.

Now im looking at playing snes, nes, master system and genesis emulators on the wii as i know they exist.
I know i can play these by running homebrew manager and then running them off a SD card but im wondering is there a way of either installing the emulator on the main screen (like neogamma) and then running the selected emulator then having the roms on a dvd (either all roms foldered off on the dvd or one dvd for each emulator)?

OR

Making a bootable dvd so all i need to do if i want o play an emulator is put in a premade dvd with emulator files AND roms on the same dvd and then just launching the dvd from neogamma or something?

SD cards in my house are hard to come by and dont really wanna buy any if need be as i have tons of blank dvds.

No clue if you can do that or not, but you can get a 4GB SD card for $10 at Wal-mart. Really not asking much for a little convenience..

Do you really think you'll need a DVD for the ROMS you'll be playing?  All those emulated games are not very large to begin with, and I can guarantee you won't be playing every single title on each one either.  SNES and Genesis are only a few MB each at most (4 seems to be the highest while 1-2 seems to be the norm), while NES and Master Systems are maybe half a MB each at most.  As suggested, a 4GB card will more than suffice.  Even a 2GB would probably be more than plenty. (It's what I use.  I have about 35 SNES roms and it takes less than 100 MB.)

I'm not even certain playing the games off a DVD is possible.  You have point to the directories these things are in, and I don't know if you can even point to the disc drive or not.

i.e. I really think you should consider "splurging" on an SD card.

8gb SD card for $12, that should be able to hold an entire collection of all English roms for all the systems you mentioned (with room to spare). I haven't used any wii emu's, but whether or not you can use a DVD is based on if the software supports using the DVD. Often you can use a USB flash drive as well for these apps...

Also, here is a link I found on adding the emu's as channels:

http://forums.qj.net/wii-homebrew-discussion/139279-guide-how-install-wii-emulator-channels.html

I really avoid adding custom channels to the Wii when possible. 1 screwup, and you have a bricked Wii. If you are OK with just running in Homebrew manager, I would recommended to continue doing it. But, I am personally overly cautious about my Wii getting bricked, so I do as little as possible to my machine.

Installing wii channels is NOT dangerous if you do it properly.

You need to have your entire first page of channels filled as well as the first column in the next page.... these are the channels that are loaded into the wii upon reboot/restart.

You need to also have the homebrew channel on the first page.

Of course you should also have bootmii/priiloader/ect installed as a fall-back but they are not needed.

Install the channel via hbc..... if by some chance it's corrupted (and if you download it from a popular site it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that it's corrupted or else people would complain) what will happen is your wii will freeze when you scroll to the next page.

This is a NON-ISSUE.  You simply manually turn off your wii, go into hbc and uninstall the wad.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to brick a wii with a channel install, but it's quite hard to do so.  I should know, I made many of the channel creation tools. BITD  ;)

The best option is an external hard drive.  As the others have said, you won't be using all the room, but you can use the extra space for game backups.  Most of the emulators are the "gx" emulators and they support loading roms from sd, usb, dvd, and network share.  You'll be hard pressed to find more storage options for homebrew on a game console.
