Defender/Stargate control diff (MAME 0.106)

Is there a diff file to add left and right directional controls to Defender and Stargate?  I tried to add the hacky controls myself but failed.  Thanks.

There used to be a cheat but it has been removed.  I suppose you could use an older mame version.  Here's an old post about it.
