Betson Imperial 27" multisync/Kortek 2914 Questions
« on: November 08, 2010, 08:20:24 am »
I found an old thread on here about this monitor. Like 5 people had problems with this thing frying. Some seemed to blame it on a bad power strip that cause it to cycle on/off over and over again. Does anybody have this monitor or know more about it? If so has it fried for you? If I turn off the powerstrip whenever it's not in use would that protect it? I was seriously considering buying one, because it's the only multisync 27" CRT I've been able to find that is CURVED. There are several others out there that are flatscreen CRTs, but that's not what I want. Any 27" monitor flat or curved of the type I'm looking for will cost me about $450 plus shipping, so I want to be confident that it's not gonna die.

Or on another note, are there any other 27" curved multisync CRT's out there?

niemandisplays.com might be able to help you out. they have chassis for all sorts of tubes. if you can get a good curved tube, you can get him to match a chassis for it.

I've had my Betson/Kortek Multi sync for over 3 years now and it has never given a problem

I just bought one on ebay for 200 shipped. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190456961754&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

the OSD would not come up but the guy shipped me a replacement chassis, which fixed the issue . It's actually am arcade/casino machine shop in Vegas. You might check with him and see if he's got anymore, because he had some spare K2914 chassis in stock.

heavy as hell, but it's a good monitor overall, tons of settings. works great at 640x480@75hz or 600x800@60hz. haven't tried cga modes ( i've another cab with a WG K7000 for that )

Best luck to you !

wow. What a steal for $200. I seem to have stumbled upon a solution for my original monitor. So I will hope that it continues to hold out (I thought it was done). But if it craps out again I will be in the market for one of these. Thanks for the replies. If your monitor starts cycling on/off and making sounds like a turn signal (relays turning on/off) post it. That's what the other thread was about. I'm still a little wary of this monitor because I think at least 3 people had the exact same problem. Good luck though. I hope it works well.

FYI, the current batch of these that Betson has are likely to be the KT-2914DF rather than the KT-2914F.  The DF is the "DynaFlat" that is totally flat, just like all the other recent 27" multisyncs.

The clicky clicky problem is likely fixable.  It seems to be caused by the MCU not switching in/out the hfreq correction components fast enough causing distorted horizontal waveforms and taking out the HOT (and possibly other stuff).  The cycling is caused by the power supply trying to start then giving up and trying again later.  There's another problem I see somewhat frequently that is probably a dead flyback, but I've not actually had someone let me fix one of them in that state (they just throw it away).
