CRT suddenly washed out???
« on: November 07, 2010, 12:51:44 am »
I have my 360 connected to a tated CRT through component cables. Today I turned on my 360 and it was all in black and white. I went around to the back of the cab, unplugged the cables and put them back in. That seemed to fix the problem....... or did it.

I don't know.. It seems that everything is really washed out right now on this TV. I had to go to the menu and turn every single picture setting to at least 90 percent of the max in order to get a nice picture. And even with these settings, some games with darker palettes (I noticed in particular on Armed Police Batrider) are practically unplayable on some levels. I can't pinpoint exactly when this started. At first I thought I was imagining it, cuz I haven't played in a few days. The only thing I've done to the monitor recently is reverse the yoke wires for a screen flip.

Any ideas?

So are using SVHS input. This willhave 2 input connectors 1 is usualy Y which means luminance/ brightness. The other is C which means Chrominace or color information. So yes when there was no color (black & white) bad/no conection on the "C"
Ok color bac but washed out, QRZ is likely right bad ground, but likely the Y connector but check them both.

It can be a cable issue such as the RCA plugs or could be on the board inside of the display.

Good Luck
Always happy to help.., for the best in displays

I seem to have stumbled across a "fix". I was fed up with my monitor and tried plugging in the composite video just to see what it looked like, but I forgot to unplug the component cables first. The picture went all black and white. Then strangely, when I took out the composite cable, and the picture remained black and white through the component cables. I turned off the TV a few times, and reset the TV/HDMI switch on my xbox and eventually the TV came on and the colors were back to how they were when I first hooked it up (I'm paraphrasing here, cuz I don't remember exactly what I did, It was about a 4 hour testing session trying to get my picture back). I also went into the hidden service menu and found a BRIGHT setting which dramatically improved the picture. So now I'm very happy and glad I'm not frantically searching the internet for a new monitor

For future reference though..... it was most likely never a "monitor" issue.
The black and white issue is usually an XBOX or cable problem. (google it up)
You probably have a flakey set of cables, hence why messing with them is what "fixed" it.

So if it happens again, start with the cables.
To test the theory, plug something else into the TV.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

thanks, you're probably right, but there was a possiblity of it being the jacks on the TV chassis. Either way it's fine now. The hidden service menu was responsible for at least 50% of the improvement. There are only like 4 standard user picture settings, but in the hidden menu there are like 10. One of which is an extra brightness setting. Before I adjusted it there were sections of dodonpachi that were pitch black, and afterwards you could see that there was actually backgrounds there. This menu is cryptic, but after doing it so many times I remember it by heart....
Turn volume to 0, put it on channel 124, go to menu -> timer -> sleep -> 30 minutes, exit menu, hit volume down button ON CHASSIS (not remote), and it goes into the service menu. You can also adjust verti, horiz hold...
