Vertical mount and console gaming
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:33:02 pm »
Long time viewer, first time poster.

Been planning out my cab for a while (already well underway building my second control panel prototype) and had been looking at pulling a 26 or 27" widescreen LCD in my cab.  I'm not really concerned with the 'authentic' look of a crt and no-one makes big 4:3 LCD monitors unfortunately.
My current sketchup plans have the monitior mounted sideways, but after seeing the awesome KI cab with the vertical monitor I am re-considering and thinking about putting the LCD in vertically - which will be awesome for a lot of the arcade games I love.

My question is though, what options do I have for running console games?  A PC will be my primary video source, but I have a number of DC and PS1/PS2 games I would like to play also (using original hardware/CDs).  Does anyone have a solution for rotating their output?  My only thought is to connect a capture card to the PC and rotate the image on the PC video output, but I am concerned that there will be too much lag.  Anyone tried this or done something better?

Thanks

If you're thinking about playing vertical shmups (only thing I can think of someone wanting to play on a vertical monitor with a DC/PS2), then the games will have the option to rotate within the options menu. If the game doesn't have option to Tate in a menu somewhere then I don't think it's gonna happen.

Yeah, don't recall any console games with that option.
I'm actually fine with playing the DC/Playstation games 'letterboxed' in the middle of the vertical screen, just hoping there's a solution to actually allow this without too much lag.  My other option is to run everything emulated on the PC but I would rather not have to rely on that.

If you PM the dude that did the KI cabinet, then he will tell you how he did it.  He wrote some sort of script
