LOL  ;D We were insane about garbage pail kids when they came out - always trying to get the latest complete series...

I wonder if this resurgence of the 80's has anything to do with that VH1 series, "I love the 80's". That series is brillient.

I had an almost complete set of garbage pail kids.  Everything but series 1, which I did have but was stolen.  I was missing a few of the multiple backed cards though.

Sold em for a few hundred bucks about 2 years ago

My only regret is that I didn't take care of my stuff....it would have been worth a small fortune, exspecially my Transformers collection- at one point I had the FULL collection  :'(

I've got a ton of Transformers at my Mom's house.

Did you know they're making a Unicron figure - after 17 years?

I think it's going to be.  According to the box, the Autobots and Decepticons form an alliance against Unicron.  But Megatron plot to add Unicron's power to his own.

80's Toys are "in" again because all of us who grew up with Transformers and GI JOE are now (hopefully) successful working types with disposable income ;)

As for garbage pail kids, that was a little after my time.

My Wacky Packages on the other hand...TREY COOL :)

Two comments:
1) The new Transformers show SUCKS!!! (nuff said)
2) The only good thing about the 80's was the video games, the toys, and the cartoons. The  movies, clothes (oh god, the clothes), most music, and everything else SUCKED! (I know there will be plenty of people to disagree)

I was just having a conversation on the phone with my mom about all this stuff last night......weird!

I had EVERY single GPK there was...I even submitted a few to Topps back when I was a kid.

I had every G.I. Joe and Transformer there was.  Hell, I can't remember his name, but I used to have the little city that had the motorized tank that went around that turned into that huge ass transformer. Wasn't it Metroplex or something similar? I didn't have all the He-Man figs, but I had allot.

At any rate, One day I came home and they were all gone....I never found out what happened to them until last night. I found out my grandma donated them all away.

Man, I would have a small fortune right now......

Actually, VH1 is going to air another "I Love the 80's" is October called "I Love the 80's Strikes Back".  Can't wait - I loved the original.

As for it being responsible for the resurgence of the 80's: I think it made it's comeback before that show.  Society always goes retro for two decades ago (i.e. reminiscing of the 50s took place in the 70's, 60's in the 80's, etc.) though that's not always entiretly true.

AlanS17 has now dissed the only decade out of the past 4 that's actually worth keeping!!!!  Oh the poor misguided fool.....

80's movies...sucked???  Tron? Empire STrikes Back?  WarGames?  Aliens?? Platoon? Apocalypse Now?? TERMINATOR...Look do I need to go on here?!??!??

Movies from the 70's: Besides Star Wars and Alien and maybe A Bridge TOo Far, what else did we get in the 70's........Hooper.  Smokey and the Bandit.  Love Story.  So Fine....The WIZ..dear lord let it end, please...!!!

Movies from the 90's: the decade that RUINED the movies of our past!....Phantom Menace (PTOOEY!), ALIENS 3 and 4 (GAAAAH!), APOCALYPSE LATER...errr ok well you get the point...

80's Music.....sucked...?
Lets see, the 80s' were the decade that opened the musical floodgates thanks to MTV and KILLED OFF the payola rule of mass-market radiostations to what we listened to.  If it wasn't for MTV, we'd still be buying albums from Journey, Styx, and Boston.....three ok bands mind you, but totally big-business controlled Corporate Rock.

Punk and Hardcore.....New Wave from LA/UK......Ska and Regge...RAP!?!?....what the hell could be better than THAT?  The 90's!?!?!  14 different boy bands, all lookin and soundin the same?   Corporate Rock masquerading as "independent music"??? (pick any of the 40 dozen quasi-metal bands out today).....
The 70's?? Actually you gotat give props for the 70's.......it was the decade that heavy metal finally blossomed and "rock" started to have unique branches...

By the way, in the 80's I list lots of musical styles...I didn't mean to imply they DEBUTED in the 80's, but rather thanks to the emergence of "Globalization" and our friends at MTV, we finally were made AWARE of them here in the US.......

As an aside, 80's fashion...come on.....who can dis the skinny leather tie? I still got one!
I swear I think its even white! :P

You won't find a bigger 80's fan than me HeadRusch (well, you probably can since I lose interest past 86) but I'll revisit some of your points.

Quote

Don't forget about those bad 80's movies:  Maximum Overdrive, Ghoulies, Leornard: Part 6, and, of course, Xanadu.

But I still agree with you.   Teen movies were actually fun in the 80's and dealt with topics more of the young population could relate to (unlike teen movies of the 90's which tried to inject drama into every nook and cranny).  Recommended reading: Pretty in Pink by Jonathan Bernstein (remember when TV shows used to try to send you to the library when they were done?).   And if you want a great 80's film made in the modern day, check out Wet Hot American Summer (warning: you will either really love this movie or really hate this movie - there is no in-between - I personally really love it).  If you live in the NYC area, you can also catch the midnight show on weekends.

I love 80's music (I currently have 500+ 45's mainly highlighting that decade) but I think 70's rock and r&b is a little stronger.  And while MTV did make sweeping changes to the music charts, I think it did it, ultimately, for the worse.  I watched an episode of Solid Gold from 1980 (acquired from a trade) and the top ten (that the Solid Gold dancers all dance around to while recited... odd) was way more eclectic than it has been for the past 22 years.  MTV changed the prerequisite from good sound to good looks.  Brittany Spears would be married to a gas pumper while working part time at a boutique right now if MTV didn't come about.  Of course we could also blame 90's decline in music to the station's over-zealousness over Nirvana and the whole ensuing grunge-era that led to a million cookie-cutter acts that all tried to be Cobain or Veddar.  Now MTV is all about snaring pre-pubescent minds into a world of commercialistic fads that are led by sugary pop acts with good looks but questionable talent.  Pop music is dead -- thanks MTV  >:(

Quote
As an aside, 80's fashion...come on.....who can dis the skinny leather tie? I still got one!

Well fads from any era always look ridiculous 20 years later, but at least 80's fads were more fun.  In what other decade can you be completely unmatched and still look good (for a good example I direct you to Punky Brewster's shoes)?

And you forgot one important thing:  80's TV.  Not so much the shows (though it's much better than the glut of 'reality shows' on today) but the fact the programs still had opening and closing credits and network bugs weren't available to deface projection TVs and obscure the action.

I could go on, but yeah, the 80's definately rocked.

What makes me really want to cry is all those Stars Wars actions figures I blew the hell out of with firecrackers, matches, lighters, BB guns, whatever, you get the idea.....   :'(

That stuff is worth a small fortune these days, DOH!

I will agree with the last 2 posts, I LOVED the 80's, wearing my checked Vans, my Miami Vice White sport coat in 7th grade dances, the skinny ties, the great music.............  What a great decade to grow up in, loved it.

I agree that MTV has totally ruined music today....but lets face it, it saved us back then.  Without MTV we'd still be listening to Captain and Tenile, and Journey. :)  MTV is such a marketing machine that its far worse than the radio-control of the 70's....its just such a farse compared to how it started out.  But...you know.....absolute power corrupting absolutely and whatnot...  Today you have to be good looking and marketable first, and talented second.

Also remember that MTV showed videos from bands whos members were already in their 30's or later...today? You'll be lucky to find an act older than 25....

(For those of you who did NOT grow up in the 80's, you have to remember before MTV nobody had even HEARD of a Music Video. The first day you saw a band...on TV...playing in some music video...was a true day of Awakening)......well, that and NIGHT FLIGHT on USA Network ;)  Half the time you saw the video you didn't even recognize the people in it....because album covers didn't always have pictures of the band!

Ok...Movies: Maximum Overdrive? Dunno man, I like it.....its cheezy, but I like it.  I remember the ads on TV with Stephen King talking to the camera "I'm going to scare the HELL out of you!".  Then themovie debuted, and they pulled those ad's pretty quick. :)

As for Teen Movies, Every generation has em.  In the 80's we had Fast Times, today they have American Pie.  In the 80's we had The Breakfast Club, or St. Elmos Fire for the OLDER kids (heh)....today..errr..well I'm sure they exist, I'm just not seein em.  But Scream, Scary Movie......pfeh...just ripoffs of slasher flicks done 20 times before.

In fact Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses (and 1000 lousy plotlines, I might add) just skips the 80's and goes right back to the horror flicks of the 70's.....The Tourist Trap, Texas Chainsaw..etc.

Television: In the 70's you had 3 choices: Sitcoms (all filmed before a live studio audience on 1 single stage), Cop Shows, and Variety Shows.  *Shudder*.  Today you have a broader range of comedies available, but the cop shows are back in Full Force.......in the 80's TV was.  Well.....

I gotta be honest: I hated TV in the 80's, at least TV that happened AFTER 5pm.  1980's AFternoon Cartoons (aka: 1/2 hour commercials) Owned, period.  Transformers, GI Joe, Robotech..heck even Thundercats, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and so on.....oooh my that was good stuff.  Saturday morning had Spiderman and his amazing friends, and the early 80's had The SuperFriends.  But other than that....80's TV was pretty bad.......in fact, I'd say 80's TV was far worse than the 70's...or the 90's.

FASHION: Ok.....today, 80's fashion looks silly....everything is freakin DayGlo...but I wore skinny ties (both regular and Knit, with the flat-bottoms).......and watching 80's music videos you forget how freakin BIG hair was then.  Big, Big Big.

Its nice to know our pop culture is nothing but an endless stream of nostalgia ;)
But when day-glo comes back into fashion, its gonna be scary to see girls dressed up like Madonna....in those ray-bans and quasi-lingere outfits, circa 1984 :P

And for those of you who didn't grow up the 80's, MTV started off ALL about music.  If they weren't showing music videos they were airing concerts on Friday night.  If they weren't doing that then they were doing interviews with rock personalities or news about rock personalities.   But this concept was so big that the networks started following suit too.  There was a sydicated video show called Top 40 Videos.  NBC ran Friday Night Videos on... er... I think Friday nights.  ABC had New York Hot Trax, etc. etc.

As for the personalities, MTV started off with VJs who were nothing special in looks but you can tell would find no discomfort in an independent record store conversaion.  Nina Blackwood, J.J. Jackson, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter were all probably the first and best VJs they've ever had and they knew music.

Unfortuately, MTV started panicing when ratings started sliding so they decided to betray their concept by running unique television shows that began straying further and further away from the topic of music.  Then in the early 90s MTV decided they wanted to 'save the world' by running specials about hate and violence and voting.   Music became less of a priority and now today, even when they play a video, it has to be wrapped by some stupid gimmick (like TRL).

As for MTV saving us?   I don't know.  Who's to tell really.  We were still listening to Journey long after MTV debuted.  There were a lot of good bands that faded because they simply were not photogenic.

HeadBangers Ball started out as an afternoon show.....I remember they'd occasionally have guest hosts on the show....eventually they moved it to Saturday Nights, but then they ruined it by having that loser Ricki Rachman (sp) host the show.  By that time 120 Minutes on Sunday Night was equally interesting, if you weren't just into metal, anyhow.

The problem with Headbangers Ball is that, to MTV, any band with long hair was a metal band.
So you'd have Anthrax, Megadeth, Metal Church, Testament on....then...you might get an hour of EUROPE, Steve Vai, Van Hagar, Poision, wahtever.....gah it was horrible.  Kerry King (I think thats his name) of Slayer did the original headbangers promo.....where he walked up to the gong in the alley and smashed it with his guitar.....

Then the later Headbangers intros used SOD for an intro tune.  Ok I'm dating myself again....

It was Headbangers ball, not the Speed Metal ball, Music comes in all styles and tastes, even metal... while I agree Posion was a abuse of eardrums everywhere, they sold alot of records, and kept the show alive. I'm not much of Speed Metal fan (well after I turned 18 -20, I had um all before that, Ride the Lightning, Metal Church (ST),Fitfull of metal, Killing is my business, Dont Break the Oath, Metal On metal.... man oh man..

Still have a taste for the old 80's metal, right now In my car I have pretty much every Judas Priest from 78-88, Dokken (everything up till 88 or so), DIO, KIX, Ratt, Early Quit Riot stuff, DIRTY LOOKS, Krokus, Accept, Ozzy, Scorps, whew....

80's Music wasnt to bad (but I'm guessing the person who didnt like it wasnt born int he 60's, more like the born in the 80's).
