Anything good about the Sega Saturn?
« on: October 30, 2010, 04:44:18 am »
Is there anything good about the Sega Saturn?  Other than Virtua Fighter Remix (which is better on the 32X anyways) is there any real reason to  go out and buy a Saturn if you had the chance?

Just get the emulator and play the saturn games through that. Some saturn games are excellent, others are terrible.

You could say that about any console ever made.

Malenko covered some great games.  Panzer Dragoon Saga is a fantastic pseudoRPG.  The Saturn has all of the best light gun games of that console generation.  It has a lot of strong platform games, too.  I'll add Nights and Bug/Bug Too to Malenko's list.

If you're into imports the Saturn has a huge library of great games.

Sega Saturn was only good for NeoGeo/Capcom ports, none of which made it to America.

??????

I have all the imports, but I also have the US versions of Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, X-Men Children of the Atom, NightWarriors: Darkstalker's Revenge, Super Puzzle Fighter II, and Marvel Super Heroes. As for the neogeo games, I think you're right because all my neogeo-saturn games are in fact imports

US on the left & import on the right. sry didnt feel like diggin through all the boxes to take pix of them all, just not in the mood to flex my e-peen

heres the neogeo imports, heh:

Which all also came out for Playstation, I thought we were talking about exclusives in this thread.   :P

I didnt see mention of "exclusives"  no CPS/CP2/NeoGeo port is an exclusive on any console.

For Example:
CPS1/2
Street Fighter Alpha came out on Arcade, Game Boy Color, PlayStation, Playstation 2 , Sega Saturn, Windows, and the PSN PlayStation Network

NeoGeo
Metal Slug came out on Arcade, Neo Geo, Neo Geo CD, PSP  PlayStation, Playstation 2, PlayStation Network, Wii Virtual Console, Wii, Windows.

And just for the record, I really hate the SNK double CD packs (they are all big like the Final Fantasy VII multiCD/instruction booket cases, but with no instruction booklets)

I enjoyed the Shinobi game on the Saturn.
It had some funny videos in it too.

I actually liked that Shinobi game as well.  It got some vicious reviews at the time, which I couldn't understand.

 :dunno

I just don't think there's a lot out there for this system that hasn't been done somewhere else better by now.  What's the point of playing Japanese versions of games when you can play them on MAME?

I was the biggest freaking Saturn apologist you ever met when that system was current... but why was there never a good version of Daytona and how come Virtua Fighter was better on the 32X??

 :soapbox:

I thought the Saturn version of Daytona USA was great.  The online version that came out later was good as well...

Well if it isnt an exclusive to the Saturn then there is not point to buy it when I have a PS1.

I did mean Saturn Exclusive Games, other than Knights into Dreams or whatever.

We listed tons of games and not a single person mentioned NiGHTS (I personally dont like the game). There are others, like Mr.Bones but you dont even sound like you bothered to look up anything me or chad listed so why should I bother? *shrugs*

The Saturn versions are pretty much across the board better than the PS1 versions for those games.  The Saturn had way better hardware.  The games released in the last third of the system's life are better than anything on the PS1.  It took Saturn developers too long to figure out the complex hardware but once they did it really took off in game quality.

BTW, I mentioned Nights earlier in this thread.

The light gun games alone make the Saturn a system worth owning if you still have a CRT.

BTW, I mentioned Nights earlier in this thread.

yup you did, my bad. I still dont like that game lol.

I'm really racking my brain to come up with titles to suggest.  I bought just about every single game and after many years finally bootlegged most of the rest.  That system ended my SEGA love affair for sure.   :P

You didnt play DreamCast?

I think we've mentioned enough (for me Virtua Cop 1 and 2 are reason enough to buy it) up to the OP.

IMO it was supposed to be a 3D sonic game but sucked enough that they made it generic to avoid bringing down the license.

SEGA screwed the pooch on Nights by giving away that free demo that had 3-4 levels.  That was more than enough Nights for everyone.

What the hell were you trying to do on that game anyway?  Group of us in a study lounge were totally confused by that one....

I remember playing the demo at a kiosk and feeling stupid because I had no idea what to do or where to go.. I didn't understand that game at all.  I'm glad to know I'm not alone

I don't understand why it go the ratings it got and why people remember night so fondly.. maybe I need to go back and give it a second chance.

If you do, be warned - it hasn't aged well at all. Chances are you'll like it less now than you did back in 96.
