Cherry Master 25" CGA monitor?
« on: August 12, 2003, 12:48:59 pm »
I'd like to hear some comments on anyone using a Cherry Master 25" CGA monitor solely for playing Mame games. I am a newbe and just at the buying parts stage to build a cabinet and want to know what people think of them. I allready heard some complaints that a 25" display seems to big for the old arcade games. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated before I dish out some $$$ for a display.

Thanks,

The display itself is fine, same as any other 25" arcade monitor.

Older games are harder on bigger monitors. Especially games like Galaga and Robotron, and other ones with lots of action on screen. It is hard to watch the entire screen at once. I score about 40 percent less on the 33" Robotron (Ultracade) at Dave & Busters, as compared to the 19" one at my house (using the exact same sticks too).

But, a 25" isn't too terribly large.

Best way to decide is this.

Do you favor pre 1984 games? If so, then go for a 19" monitor.

Or do you favor post 1990 games? If so, then go for a 25" monitor.

It also depends on your cabinet. The farther away your head is from the screen, the larger you can make it.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that a vertical game (like Galaga) will be very close to the size of the original when displayed on a horizontally mounted 27" monitor.

Smaller than that, and the vertical ones start looking small.

A final thing to keep in mind is that vertical games displayed on a horizontal CGA monitor will be at a kind of lower resolution, because they are being scaled down to fit. That is one of the reasons why I prefer VGA monitors.

Thanks for the replies. I will be playing mostly pre 1984 games since those are my favorite but I am now leaning toward the Wells Gardner 25" since it seems so highly recommended. I might just move it back farther in the cabinet like you suggested.

I got a 19" VGA horizontally mounted. It works great, but vertical games are a bit small. When I had my 25" CGA hooked up, playing the 19" vertical games was a snap. It felt very original even with the sides of the screen just blank.

How about the cherry master 25 inchers on Ebay right now? Are those good? Do I need ArcadeVGA to run them, or to make the expense worth while?

The ones on Ebay for $160 & $180 are the primary reason why I posted this since thats much cheaper than a $500-$700 Wells Gardner but I am thikning that I rather go with the quality and fork up the extra cash for the quality.
