Re-surface XArcade Tankstick with new overlay???
« on: October 12, 2010, 12:15:54 am »
Howdy folks.  My cabinet, as I call it the "Quasicade" utilizes an XArcade Tankstick as the control panel.  I'm getting flat tired of the branded overlay and would like to know if anyone has replaced this overlay, and if so, with what, and how hard was it to do?

I feel like, that if I carefully took out the components and removed the top, that I could take off the t-moulding and peel off the top textured overlay.

So...
1.  Has anyone on these forums done it?
2.  Would it be easier for me to just build my own control panel and replace it?
3.  If it can be done, what should I use for the new overlay and what vendors would you recommend to print it?

I know, I know, there are some hard core XArcade haters out there...but does anyone have any advice for me?

I have the same issue.

I was thinking of just getting a custom sticker made from a sign store that would cover up the whole top. and go a little behind the t-moulding so it would lift at the edges.

Another thought was to do the same thing and then bold on some plexi glass to keep it together.  I just didn't know if the life time warranty of the tankstick would be voided if I bolted anything to it.

I just used a heat gun to remove some 20old stickers from the side of an old cabinet so I also thought this might lift off the laminate of the X-arcade, but will likely go the sticker route for now.

HTH or at least give syou some ideas ;)

Well, that's an idea.

It would still involve taking apart the controls and removing the t-moulding.  Once it's apart, cover the top with a vinyl decal, custom printed anyway you like, tuck around the edges and put the t-moulding back.  Might be worth a try.

I'm still looking for anyone who has done this already who can give me some pointers.

You wouldn't have bolt on the plexi, you can just use the buttons to hold it down, I would worry about the trackball being to shallow though with the plexi-route.
