Monitor goes blank
« on: October 10, 2010, 06:33:31 pm »
So I am going to pick up an Ivan Stewart machine today and the seller says that it will play for a random amount of time then the screen goes blank, (game plays blind). Any suggestions on where to start looking for problems?  I will have more details when i get it home and see for myself just what is happening but i thought i would get a head start on picking your brains.

uhm... the monitor?

my guess is a bad solder joint someplace... only way to figure out is to pull the board and start searching.

you could also run it until it fails, then check the temperature of some of the components and see if anything is hot.

every once in awhile a tv/monitor will come in for intermittent loss of pic.
when this one is blank ( dark ? ) ,  verify illuminated filaments ( neck glow )
may simply be a poor filament ground connection .

for what it is worth , i have encountered this symptom several times on WG monitors.....

Had to put off this project already. My closing date came sooner than expected so I'll have to get back to it in a few weeks. The up side is it will be in my very own work shop, can't wait.

I had this problem not to long ago on a WG 7901.  Was a bad solder joint on the flyback.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice.....there is!!

i've got a similar issue with the hantarex polo 2 monitor in my golden tee cab, bought it stupidly cheap as it was sold for spares due to it shutting down at random intervals (and as i'm maming it, that's fine)

soon found out it's the monitor shutting down, if i leave the back door open and lock out the door switch (so it dosent kill power when i take the door off) when the monitor dies, i can unplug the monitors power cable from the distribution block, plug it back in, and the monitor comes right back, and i could continue the game.

i too suspect a bad solder joint, i get no neck glow that i could see when it did it, and i did notice the picture jumped and there was a slight 'click' noise, sort of when changing resolutions on a pc monitor, next time it jumped it shut down.

sometime i will get round to pulling the monitor and checking for bad solder jonts, but got too many silly projects on the go atm,
would be nice to hear what you find tho, as even tho it may be a different monitor, the place to look for bad joints would be handy for a starter, as i've not messed about in a monitor before (i know which bits not to touch and all that, andhow to discharge it if needed etc)
