Pool players? (Billiards)
« on: September 28, 2010, 11:33:23 pm »
Are there any other pool players here? I play on two different 8 ball leagues. One on Tuesday and one on Thursday on 9' tables. I can never get to sleep after playing though. I think about the shots I missed.

In our league you get 1 point for each ball you put in and 3 points for the 8. You play 5 games so you can get a total of 50. I had a 46 tonight and I should have had a 50. Missed a fairly easy one and now I can't sleep.    (Not that a 46 is bad but still...)

I just got done with my Tuesday night.  Play in 8/9ball leagues on Tuesday and Wednesdays.  One my 9 ball match and didn't play 8.  I have no problem going to sleep..wish I had a table at home to play more though and then I might not sleep as much.

I haven't played in any tournaments in a long time, but I do have a pool table in my gameroom.  I'll shoot a game or two with visitors, more if its my family.

I would love to get a table but we are in a small townhouse and there is no room. I could MAYBE fit a 7' downstairs but I think it would be tough with a full size stick if you were on the rail. :P

The guy I got the pool table from had it in a small room.  He ended up getting custom short sticks made.  He gave me everything, so now when little kids are over, they get the small custom cues.   ;D

I love playing pool too. There's a bar 2 minutes away from here, sometimes me and my brother go down there and have a few beers and play pool. He scratches the cue ball a lot :lol

I'm in the "love to play but really terrible" camp. Fortunately, that's where my friends are all at, so we're 'competitive' with each other. I really enjoy 9-ball. Billiards is one of those games I'd really like to be good at, but I just cannot imagine investing the time necessary to become so. It's a bit like hackysack and yo-yo's. :D

I used to play a ton of pool back in college, way back in 1992/1993.   I still have my cue, but don't play at all anymore.

I used to play in high school all the time, only because I lived next door to a pool hall. Nowadays, I just play lots of Virtual Pool 3.

Speaking of virtual pool, did anyone else here play (video) on the NES? I remember enjoying that game a lot as a kid. Especially turning the friction down to 1 or 2, and hoping the cue ball stayed out.

And I did it again. I had a possible 50 and lost my last game and ended with a 47. I really hate that. (Again...not that 47 is bad but still.)

You know it's funny to hear people talk about how they would love to have a pool table of their own.  When I was growing up my Dad thought it would be great to have a table so he could teach his boys how to shoot pool.  I remember playing when we had friends or family over, other wise the cover was on the table and my mom used it to air dry laundry.  To this day I still suck, as do my brothers, and my Dad still never plays.  Amazingly the table has been re-felted once in 30 years and still looks amazing!!!  The re-felting was because my parents moved not that the felt was worn :dunno

If you have the disposable income and room to spare go ahead.  Other wise go to the local pool hall.  It costs less, there's an opportunity to play with new people who will present new challenges, and when you get tired of playing you don't have those huge slabs of slate to get rid of.

Just my 2 cents.

Is that an in house league?  I'm not familiar with too many leagues that score 8 ball with point per ball.

It is an in house league. Not sure if it is unusual though. I have never played anywhere else before. :P

Link to the league page where I play...

It sounds like 9ball in APA but for 8ball from what you said.  APA 9Ball is 1 point per ball and 2 for the 9.

and back to frustration...Played in a regional tournament to qualify to go to nationals in Vegas.  It was a two day tournament and shot great Saturday.  Won 31-6, 31-28 (big comeback - was down 28-22), and 31-16.  Had the finals today and shots weren't falling like they were before.  Had my chances but couldn't take advantage.  Lost 31-24.  Got a small plaque for runner up and know that I was one win away from Vegas.  I guess I can always qualify to try again in March :)

That sucks. I guess it is better to mess up there instead of Vegas. :P Good luck next time.

Eh.. I don't know about that.  If i mess up in Vegas, I'm still in Vegas for "free" (league pays for most of flight and hotel).  That game is going to haunt me for a bit.  Back to league this Tuesday though.  It was my first regional tournament (have played in quite a few other local tournaments), so I should be happy ;D
