This is the sequel to 'The girl with the dragon tattoo'. It had a lot to live up to (i gave the first movie a 4.5/5). Unfortunately, it didn't come close. the start dragged on. One or two people actually left. Interestingly, two Muslim couples were there. The middle eastern couple left just as a lesbian scene finished. The Afghan couple left just a bit later. Maybe they had no idea what the movie was about.

The rest of us endured. To be fair, the movie did pick up after 30 minutes or so. But by the end the plot was getting a bit silly. A bit 'hollywood'. Maybe it was a different director. Or maybe the story was lame and that was why the books were published posthumously    Or of course more likely is that the book is great, but they cocked up the script writing.

Anyway, this is dipping into Angels & Demons territory. And I might have to score it the same too

I agree it was not as good as the first movie but I think I liked it a bit better than you did.  The books are quite good. I'm on my second go around through them right now.  I can't see how anyone that has not read the books would like the movies.  Particularly the 2nd one.  They just leave so much out--out of necessity.

I liked Angels and Demons okay, it certainly was much better than Iron Man 2 (worst 2010 mainstream movie by far).

Saw Devil last night, I'd give it a 3/5.


The dragon tattoo movies are all being remade by Americans, so they'll probably be better.  The books are odd but I've really enjoyed them.

Pretty sure the author dropped dead about 3 weeks after handing in the manuscripts.

Hmmm, I honestly don't think Hollywood will do a good job of the first movie. Part of my enjoyment of the first was it's difference to Hollywood. But if they are successful enough to make the second, they can't do worse than the one I just saw!

Glad to see I'm not the only one disappointed in Iron Man 2

wp34. I find it's normally the case that people who have 'read the book', hate the movie. If they do a good job of the movie, it should be stand-alone. There is no real need to consult a book, and better not to know the differences, which is why people tend to be disappointed. I haven't read the books. I am disappointed in the second movie for different reasons than someone who may have read the book.

I haven't seen any of the movies (well, seen about 1/2 of the first one), but I've read all 3 books.  I really like the first one, second one was good, but not great, and I honestly thought the third book was boooring.

I can't see how anyone that has not read the books would like the movies.  Particularly the 2nd one.  They just leave so much out--out of necessity.  

I haven't read any of the books.  I doubt I will.  My book list is too long and I've heard too many conflicting reviews of them.  I LOVED the movie, though.  I only saw the first one.  They didn't leave anything out.  Of course, I haven't read the book, so I wouldn't know.  What I mean to say is that the movie worked as a cohesive whole--there were no plot wholes (at least no glaring ones) on account of missing book parts.  This is what a movie based on a book must do.  Nobody wants to see a seven hour movie just so every detail of the book can be included.

Cider House Rules is a great example of this.  It was a great movie that took place over a single summer that Homer Wells spends at the apple orchard.  In the book the story is told over like a 40-year period that Homer was staying at the orchard.  So the movie cut out like 30-40 years.  And it was the better for it.  And John Irving, who adapted his own novel for the screen, knew it.  

A good adaptation captures the spirit and the story of the novel.  If you want every last word of the novel, just read the novel.

off topic : oki, well. As a Swede I can say that Swedish films sucks monkey balls. It's either a "redneck" comedy or movies about someone getting killed (and a cop trying to solve the murder or whatnot).
And we only have like 10 actors that is in EVERY fckn movie made over the last decade.

on topic:  I have other Swedish friends who say the same thing about the film industry.  In fact, I introduced Let the Right One In to them!.  They hadn't noticed cos they pay no attention to films that come out of Sweden.

We're selling something similar at work, its a bar/stick with the same licorice wrapt around different kind of fillings (mint, strawberry, sweet licorice, salmiak etc etc)

Awesome!  Those Pingvin pastillers don't have any filling.  It's just salty liquorish.  But it's the best I've ever had.

Unless it's anime, dubbed movies really, really blow.

The exception being Monkey Magic of course, but the corny dubbing was part of the charm (",)

BUT! there is the Disney classics that they managed to make some good versions of here in Sweden.

The Germans are big on dubbing every damn movie that comes out, don't actually know how they could enjoy those movies.

Fincher's movie will almost certainly be inferior, but with such a good director and cast (and template) it's bound to be pretty good.  I'd be amazed if they improved on the Swedish film, though.  Probably the only people who dislike it will be those who saw the original.

The book club I'm in just read "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" and we are reading "Let the right one in" next.  Bit of a Swedish theme going.
