Problem with SEGA emulators
« on: September 17, 2010, 09:36:25 pm »
Hi guys,

Have finally got my first MAME build up and running, and loving it.

Having some issues with SEGA games - I scroll through the menu fine, and select a game with P1 start button no problems, but can't get any further than that. The games are telling me to "Select Start', which I'm doing, but it's not registering. Coin buttons etc don't do anything either.  All other emulators (MAME, Daphne, Nintendo.....) work fine.

Obviously something in the set up I need to change, but what is it?  And I should mention that I didn't do the original PC config myself, so please be specific in what I need to change rather than a general response like 'change xyz setting' - please tell me how to change it.

Thanks!

romshark

First of all, what Sega system (Master System, Genesis / Mega Drive, Saturn, Game Gear, Dreamcast) are you trying to play, and what emulator (Kega, Genesyst, Fusion, ect) are you using?

Probably best to get the emulator working by itself first, then integrate it into your front-end. Oh, and what front-end are you using?

There's 2, and I've got the same problem with both - Master System and Genesis.  Front end is Mala.

I don't know - I haven't tried that. Getting back to the part where I don't really know what I'm doing - how do I do that?

<snip> what emulator (Kega, Genesyst, Fusion, ect) are you using?

You didn't address this question and I suspect it's because you don't know. Unfortunately you're going to have to find out before anyone can give you any help. I'd say do some reading on how Mala works. But for a start you can mouse right click on the Mala screen, select Options, the Other Emu tab, find the Master System or Genesis and click on it, then look on the right-hand side at the Executable box. That should be able to tell you which emulator you're running and where it is. Then, as romshark suggested, try running the emulator by itself (browse to the folder and double-click the exe. What you need to do then is try and get to it's configuration and change the buttons to match your machine's config.

That's about the best I can do as long as the actual emulator remains shrouded in mystery.

The best emulator for most Sega games is fusion. (If you are not talking about sega games in the mame set). It's easy to use. You don't need to set it up outside your fronend, unless you want to alter the keys (Those are fairly standart as far as i remember).
Make a folder with  fusion in, a folder with your Sega roms, one for each type Sega games and then consult your manual for how to add an emu.
You use Mala so do I. So i can give you all the info here:

In MALA: In options (right mouse click to get the curtain) choose 'other emu config' and press 'new'. Call it now Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega Pico, Sega 32X or what ever. IT can handle the following Sega types besides the ones I've already mentioned: Game 1000, Mastergear, MEGA, MEGA CD. The Sega Gamegear needs an emu like Mess 1.37. For Sega Dreamcast I use Chanchast. It can run about 106 of the 241 games for this machine and error free.
Lets say you've entered Sega Game-1000 by pressing the button NEW, now you need to put the right dir into the 'executable' field. Mine is C:\101\Fusion\Fusion.exe, but yours should reflect your folders and end poiting at fusion.exe. In 'rom path' field you should have a dir to the folder with your game-1000 files. Note the last field on the setup page will be automatically filled out with the word zip or sms if you've done things right.
On the execution' page the 'commandline' should be "%path%\%rom%.%ext%" -sms -auto -fullscreen  Windowstate should be chosen 'hidden'. On the Page where hotkeys are you tick hotkeys and press 'edit hotkeys'. It will say 'close' and this is fine. All things are automated for the feautre ESC (CLOSE).
Now return to the normal MALA screen and chose your new Sega setup and say 'generate full list'. A Gamelist shold now  come with the number of files in your folder. Selecting a game on the list should now start up the game and everthing should run. You can edit the keys by starting up fusion outside Mala and alter the keys to match the Mame keys if this is the ones you have chosen as the standart keys.

On my setup Sega Mastersystem I had a problem getting Fusion running so I chose MESS 1.34 (at that time now 1.37). It runs likewise and needs no esc hook. I'm not shure that Mess can handle all Sega consoles. Only the Early ones right now.
