Video output to TV
« on: September 14, 2010, 07:31:24 pm »
I'm looking at different options to output from a video card to a TV and would like some input.

If I find a card with a VGA or even DVI output, is there a simple way to convert the signal to either standard video in (ie yellow phono-style jack) or to an S-VHS input?  Or, do I need to look at something specific, with a specialized output? (I'm looking cheap, obviously.)

I would read more, but it's difficult to navigate on my BlackBerry. I'm hoping this is a simple answer.

Well, I'm not on my Blackberry now, and since nobody jumped in to call me a noob (appreciated), I found it myself.  It's cheap, locally available, and makes me a happy monkey.

That cable is designed for some oddball projectors and laptops that specifically support it.  I've NEVER seen a PC that supports that.  It won't work.

The simplest option is to get a video card for your PC that has TV out or buy a device known as a "scan converter" that will plug into your VGA port and output Composite/S-Video.  The latter is available online for ~$25-50.

Thanks!  Will keep an eye out.  Very much appreciated.

Take a look at soft 15khz over in the 'Monitor/Video' forum.  Not sure if you can connect directly to a TV with it though.

The reason I suggest trying soft 15k is that it's free and so easy that I got it to work!!!  Also, you can use just about any video card you want.

You cannot unless you have a TV with e.g. RGB SCART (reasonably common in Europe but not the rest of the world), though it can be used with an outboard RGB to S-Video (NOT a scan converter) or RGB to YPbPr component adapter to get native video on a TV.  The results are usually MUCH better than a scan converter or onboard TV out as it avoids a bunch of scaling,  but it does require more work.

Slider2732 got this to work for him, he likes it and says there is no tearing, and it will work with most composite or s video output cards (of which I also have a few extras...)..... :dunno

I appreciate that, thanks!  Let me check into my stock of hardware I have at home - I have a box of motherboards and video cards, and if I remember correctly, one of the video cards may be an ATI All-In-Wonder AGP, and I believe it has a TV out...  I'm not entirely sure.

If I need it, I know who to call!  Thanks again!

I've had very poor luck getting native video out of the TV out (S-Video/Composite) on PC cards.  They always seem to want to scale it.  Maybe the newer stuff is better.  I've mostly been using old crap I had laying around.

I didn't figure he had SCART.  I just knew that if I said it couldn't be done, SOMEBODY would helpfully "correct" me.

y,y, no worries, just fartin' around with what I have seen done, the AIW should have the composite video output, but S will look better if you have to go this route.  (and it may have that too- I cant remember.  been a while since I saw an AIW.)

I got a cheap video card for like $35-$40 with S-video out on Newegg, and I got a 27" CRT with s-video and comonent input for $45 at a pawn shop just a couple weeks ago. The picture looks great and for under $100 I don't think you can go wrong.
