A few questions about MAME (that I probably knew once, years ago!)
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:10:14 am »

Now I have my mame cab going again, I just have a few questions that searching for seems to throw up too many answers for. Basically, I saved all my settings and roms from my old setup, and transferred them to the new setup.

First, some maybe obvious questions:

1) I can't seem to get TAB up in a game. I tested the keyboard in notepad, and TAB definitely still works.

2) How do I permanently adjust individual volumes? You can use tilde in a game, but that reverts to full volume next time you go into that game.

I'm using mame32 v78. I don't know how many of the basics have changed since then, but I assume you guys are familiar with ini files n stuff? More than I am familiar anyway  ;D

I have a trickier question about graphics, but i'll save that for later. It's getting late  :D

as for the tab key, you just can delete the defaul.dat that its in your cfg mame folder, and next time you fire up mame it will create a new one...

Thanks, that worked (",)

One down...

Hehe.

Ok, here's the tricky graphics question. For the most part, the games are displaying correctly. But several horizontal games, like Defender and Robocop, are displaying vertically! Other horizontal games like Pang, and Simpsons are fine. They are all set with directdraw enabled, and rotation set to auto anti-clockwise. I've fiddled with a couple of settings, but I can't figure out why a couple of horizontal games are vertical, but not the rest...

I absolutely have to have Robocop and Defender working properly. Especially Defender, since I actually have the CP set up for it.

Geez, I really stretched my memory here. It occurred to me the first time I tried mame in xp (in about 2003) there was something i had to do in the desktop properties thingo. Sure enough, in graphics properties, 'enable rotation' was ticked. YAY for my brain!!

And thanks for the suggestions.

Now, about individual volume adjustment...

(",)

Oh, also the vertical games in particular weren't fitting nicely. After much fiddling I've discovered the magical aspect ratio of 6:5. Don't know why, but that seems to fit quite nicely with the monitor I'm using. At least for some verticals like Pacman, Commando and Galaxians...
