Google's new instant search feature
« on: September 09, 2010, 02:03:27 pm »
So when you search Google through their website you no longer have to press the search button.  Google just constantly runs real-time searches based on your keypresses.  But I just noticed something kind of funny.  If what you're typing is in any way offensive, Google won't return automatic results.  Type "jenna " and you'll automatically be presented with the first page of 870,000 results.  But the second you type "jenna j" all results disappear.  Type "what the f" and you'll have automatic results.  Add a "u" to it and all your results will disappear (until you actually press enter or click search).  It makes sense, but was was unexpected and kind of funny.

Hasn't the auto-complete been there for a really long time?

Yes, but not the way it does it now.

Yes, but not the way it does it now.
And its not just auto-complete. It gives you actual results as you type.

It's an interesting change, but I don't see it being a huge difference for me.   :dunno

I don't even notice it.  Why in god's name would I stop to look at results between each letter I type?  I'm not just typing random letters.  I'm trying to make a word!  A specific word!  How is this useful to me?  If I'm searching for information on the word "destination" why do I care about results on "dragons", "dentists", "desks", "destabilization", "destitute", or "destiny".  I was searching for info on "destination."  That's all I wanted.  It just seems like a giant waste of bandwidth.

I'm wondering how this works on low-bandwidth connections... ?  I know text is pretty small in data size, but still...

It's growing on me.  Sometimes I see what I need without finishing the search word; that has value.
