What is the best store bought handheld for MAME and Emulators, no extra hardware needed just software etc...  Looking to buy tomorrow, I know PSP is suppose to be pretty good but what models and what should I look for when looking for one?

Pandora ,gp2x,

not sure how far psp or dingoo has gotten on the front, but I loved the PSP for emulation.  I had a slim version and loved it to death... literally.

I hear Pandora is pretty great, but pretty pricey.  It's relatively new, but will cost ya about 250 or 300 (I forgot the exact cost).

Pandora isnt store bought is it, where would you get it?  What model is the slim version of the PSP?  1000, 2000, etc?

oh.. store bought?

hmm.. then psp will be your only option.  Cps2 and cps1 emulators run great on it, haven't tried mame.

ahem.. if you do get the pandora (not store bought), and have 400 bucks laying around, looks like mame will run well for you.

mebbe not for MAME, but PSP rocks your socks for SNES,PSX, Genesis, etc and you can get a PSP phat used for next to nothing

PSP Phat/ Fat is the PSP-1000 can be modded , the first model of slim PSP-2000 can also have custom firmware installed. the PSP-3000 (second gen slim) and PSPGo AFAIK cant be modded. Its pretty easy to do, theres a brazillion FAQs out there

Cool, so get the 1000 fat one...  they got those at Gamestop used for like 80... so you know I can get one for 60  :)

Thanks, I'm going to Connecticut tomorrow for two weeks for work and wanted to get one to play some

I prefer the phats, more comfy in my hand and dont feel as cheap; but the pspslims have more RAM. The CPS1 and CPS2 , and NeoGeo emus are perfect though

I remember them being 80-85 bucks pre-owned for the 1000, they may have gone up, game stop does that from time to time.  When God of War 3 came out the price on God of War 1 for PS2 doubled.

Looks like the refurbished PSP 1000s are 100 and they dont list the used ones on their site anymore...  ???

So yea, 100 for the refurbished, and that may be a good deal, depending on their refurbishing methods.

I actually have gotten some for cheaper, look through the ones listed as broken.  Find a psp phat with a broken umd.  You will not need the umd working if you are going to be using it for emulation.  The pandora battery just needs access to the memory card slot and battery. I've found some as low as 55 with free shipping.  You can get great memory cards here here.. they even have adapters for micro sdhc cards (if you really wanted everything on there,  you can get 2 x 16 gb micro sdhc = 32gbs).  I think i had a colleciton of snes, nes, genesis, atari, neo geo, cps 1 and 2, and turbo grafx 16  in a 16gb memory card.

www.dealextreme.com

2 things to ask when buying a broken psp (and it must be able to do both)

1. does it still power on when not connected?
2. does it read memory cards?

Hmm, indeed, I wouldnt need the UMD and that is likely a high loss item...  Thanks.  I got to goto Connecticut tomorrow for two weeks, maybe I'll find one on CL while Im up there.  Especially if I loose this donkey kong tabletop that Im bidding on eBay...

gamestop refurbished = used console cleaned off with windex and alcohol.

there is no sony tech's in the back of gamestop tearing psp's down all day next to the xbox tech's.

there methods are a rag and liquid lol.

thats becuase one would take there ---smurfy--- thomson out and swap it with the samsung and take it back and say it no workie.

that was just a way for them to let them know you opened and therefore they can say O well when a problem came.

another thing to keep in mind is remember the V 1.6 nobody wanted? another reason there was a sticker on there becuase one would open it and say oop V1.6 better take this one back and continue to do so until they got the version mobo they were after etc.

nothing to do with them actually refurbing anything really and was used for the same purpose MS put there's on for.

you can buy a joystick from dealextreme.. just make sure you check the  reviews and find the one that has the best reviews.  They also sell chargers.

Just make sure that the lcd screen works, that the battery works when charge, that it can read a memory card, and that it can power on.

definatly worth the wild.

make sure you have a good and correct sized bit and not to over tighten the screw's when putting the face back on becuase the thread's strip very easy if you need to take it off.

buy or make a pandora mattery with custom firmware (cfw)

it's hard to brik a psp phat (aka psp 1001).  The pandora bettery lets you unbrick it anyways.

was the analog easy to fix? or did you end up just not using it?

Also, you got it off craigslist right?

Anyone looking to sell a used psp 1001? I had 2 before and sold one on here,  the one I kept broke so now I'm looking to buy again  ::)
