Anyone see Expendables?!
« on: September 02, 2010, 12:55:53 pm »
A bunch of my guy friends and I went out with out our girls to go check out The Expendables. Just wondering if anyone else had seen it, and what they thought about it. I personally thought it was hilarious, and terrible at the same time. Kind of one of those "so bad its good" flicks. Dont get me wrong, some of the parts were god awful and hard to watch.

Just wondering anyone elses thoughts. Bored at work lol.  ;D
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I wanted to love it, since I love cheesy 80's action movies. There was some cool action, but I thought the comedy fell really flat considering how much potential was there with all these old guys back in the same movie.

Jet Li got the only chuckle out of me when he said "Your lucky ring stinks!"

Yeah, youre right about that. It was a late showing too, so we couldnt even salvage the night and go out and get wasted.  :banghead:

Me too. I hated how Van Damme was in it, and the new van damme was (jason statham). Then Van Damme and Dolph could have relived some Universal Soldier days. I dunno, the writing was so terrible, the mickey rourke scene with the chick, the end... Ugh.  ::) Also, the CG blood, and the terrible fire, the effects were lame.

The best part was in the beggining where Dolph blew that dude in half with the shot gun. They even made the part with arnold lame...  :hissy:

there is a chance that was intentional comedy................. :dunno

bruce willis and eric roberts are the only 2 delivered any "acting". rourke scene with the girl was hilariously bad. ARE YOU SERIOUS :lol

Just saw it today. Arnies cameo was a squandered opportunity. It's the most wooden I've ever seen him! Pity.

It is worth watching just to see Jet Li fighting Dolph Lundgren! And that automatic shotgun and it's effects  :lol

You sometimes laughed because that was the intended effect, and sometimes laughed because of the 'Ed Wood' effect. Bit hotchpotch. Stallone is not sophisticated enough to have made any of that deliberate...

I saw it at my favourite discount cinema, during the day, so it was only $6.50. I say it's worth $6.50  ;D

I give it 3/5  DVD, or cheap Tuesday job.

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me

4/5 - Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

HAha yeah Dolph was the best part IMO, out of all the "expendables" at least. I didnt like the fighting too much cause it was so flashy, I couldnt even tell what the hell was going on half the time. Im a fan of randy couture too, so him beating steve austin was nice.

Lucky. I blew full price on that trash. 12 bucks!

Kinda off topic but i belive thats why people pirate, because they dont wanna risk spending 12 bucks on a movie that may suck.  Some people say "12 bucks is nothing", but if you taking the wife and kids that can turn into 60 with the price of there tickets and popcorn and such.  At a movie theatre were i live near, its 12 dollars just for a medium soda and a medium popcorn.  I am not saying pirating is right, but i understand why they do it.

What is totally unbelievable is that someone told me they are making a sequel. I Said the producers mustnt have paid much if they are confident of getting a return on their investment. Turns out it has already doubled the initial investment, making about 180 million in the first week or so!

Yeah I read that too. Couldnt believe it. It was good timing on releasing it though, wrapping up summer, there isnt anything out that can really compete with it I guess. Its one of those "oh man you gotta see it cause its so bad" kind of flicks. Van Damme and Seagal are supposed to be in the second one.

Machete only got 11 million its opening weekend haha.  :lol

Think thats whoever Stallone hooked up with because it was the same cheese-dick looking CGI blood as Rambo (which I actually liked). I don't get it because it's probably a lot more work than just using fake blood, and it still looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

Oh i see. First Blood was also known as Rambo:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083944/

I never thought of it as First Blood. Thought it might have been a tad early for CGI  ;D

I'll admit I was going to attempt to string you along, perhaps even suggesting they did the effects on a Commodore 64.  ;)

:duckhunt

The best lies are those closest to the truth. If you had transposed how the did TRON special effects to your story, I might have gotten sucked in. Although of course, a few seconds with some fake blood beats weeks or months (back then) of generating seperate stills and then filming them...

My prediction for Expendables II: First blood contact revenge man, is that it will bring the total profit of the series back down to zero, or less  ;D
The novelty was in the first.

Yup. Couldnt agree with you more. Oh well, we shall see. There isnt really anything coming out on the horizon that looks that interesting. Kind of a bummer cause I love movies.

The stupid thing is that they killed off the guy with the most untapped potential in that whole group.  Steve Austin did a great job in The Condemned.  I think Hollywood is learning the WWE is a world class training ground for action stars and the occasional crossover star (The Rock).

I agree with pretty much everything above.  The movie just wasn't that well made or written.  I grew up addicted to these guys' movies and this one was as bad as the worst any of them made.

My biggest issue with this movie is that if they had tried they could have gotten an epic fight scene out of Randy Couture and Steve Austin.  They just didn't bother.

I'd pay $20 to see the sequel if it has Roddy Piper in it.

Tell you the truth, the fight scenes IMO were garbage. The DP must have been an epileptic, because I couldnt even tell what the hell was going on. I cant stand that in fight scenes. One that comes to mind is Batman Begins. Every fight scene was just a bunch of flashes of color, and I had no idea who was fighting whom. The Dark Knight they slowed it down a bit and you could actually see people getting hit. I wanted the Jet Li fight with Dolph to be cool, and bam. Disappointment due to shoddy camera work. Samething with Randy and Steve Austin.  :banghead:
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Nah.  Roddy Piper is awesome.  I don't mean to describe him as awesome.  I mean he literally is awesome.  If people were more articulate they would point to awesome things and say "look at that!  That thing is Roddy Piper!"

It was enjoyable, The cast was great and the story was ok. For an action flick it's one of the best of the year. IMO
