Any other mac frontends?
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:47:46 pm »
Hey
I have tried emulaunch for mac, although it works I have to use the keyboard to exit... I want to use my joystick to exit the emulator and front end if possible.  Is there any other mac frontends??

thanks
Jim

Hey
I have been playing with emulaunch... and got it to work somewhat however.. how do you get the emulators to close? they always remain open and run in the dock after exit? I have to hit cmd+w to close it.. thus I need a keyboard which really sucks.

If you buy the Emulation Enhancer from Richard Banister (the guy that makes almost any emulator on the mac), then you can assign esc to quit all emulators. Then it works with the regular esc of your control panel. There is another FE, kind of iTunes like, but I like EL better. Maybe in a few months I will come up with a total new FE for the mac. Minimalist, high-res graphics and customizable for all emulators. Now I have made a custom skin for EL. The maker stopped development of EL, and he was not interested in opening source for others to proceed as he told me it was a great messy piece of code in Actionscript or so.

And use self-compiled SDL mame as MAME. Way better than Mame OSX. It is more up to date, works with U360's and is a tad faster too.

Hey
I am not using it on a cab yet. Just want to run it as a gaming console.  I have been playing with emulaunch and it appears very buggy.  Sometimes the emulators do not close, other times the dock flashes up or shows up while EL is open.

I am running a Imac 21" with 3ghz and 4 gig of ram, 1tb hd.. great computer best ever, however the software for emulation is limited and it is really piss*ng me off!  I all I want is  simple list with photo so I can stream games to my lcd tv and play like a console.......

JR
PS-I looked into the ITUNES like frontend, it is  only for mame.

Did you start downloading all Banister emu's and purchase his add-on? That is the way to start retro-gaming on a mac.
With Emulator Enhancer, the Mac emulation actually pivots and surpasses the PC experience. I always :banghead: over those zillion different pc-emulator programmers doing different things. With 1 guy that does it all, life is very easy on the Mac.

I do not experience your problems. The only EMU that bugs me is Sixtyforce, which hides on a mouse click (which I have one under my trackball). But then again, I could have disabled mouse-input for Sixtyforce with a control-remapping utility.

This is probably the biggest PITA when using Macs to play more than one game. Whomever originally coded that "command+w" closed a game and returned to the gamelist was not really thinking ahead. Pressing ESC just pauses a game and then you have to use a mouse to actually close the game.
I have found a solution but you need an ipac....
Use the ipac utility called "MacIpac" programming located here:
http://www.ultimarc.com/download.html#ipacmac
I programmed the start 1 button to be "command" and the start 2 button to be "w". I just reconfigued these buttons in mame so they still work in the games. Now I just press start 1+2 and VIOLA, just like a shift command!
Big workaround but it works.
Good luck!

Emulation enhancer takes care of full screen playback, but also of uniform control mapping. You can assign esc to become a quick-quit button in all Banister emulators, and that does what taylor uses his iPac hack for. Is it 35$ now? I guess it was 15$ when I paid it.

It does this:
Quote
# Support for network play (certain emulators only).
# Support for USB joysticks and gamepads.
# Support for full screen mode.
# Support for audio effects.
# Support for opening recent games quickly.
You need no video to understand that I guess.

See it as a way to pay Banister for his awesome work. He can't put a price on the individual emus as they are based on open source stuff mostly, so I see this as a way to support his great one-man act to give the Mac a vital emulation scene.

Dude, that's a JOKE! I always say "VIOLA", like FRANK VIOLA, the legendary baseball pitcher for the NY Mets. J O K E

Demon- I never use a FE with Macs, most of my Macs run dedicated cabinets or I just suffer with things being not so pretty when I return to
a game list. If the game list could be rotated vertically would be a huge improvement! Misfit for Mac is real close, no nag screens, if the game menu rotated, it would be very noice.
When it comes to playing LOTS of games on one cabinet, PC is king, period. However, if you want just ONE game to be perfect, especially a classic, a Mac may do it better and look nicer, your mileage will vary....
