Can someone do me an idiots guide of upgrading Mame

I currently have the full rom set of mame 0.87 and i am running mame 0.87 on my cabinet. However alot of the roms dont work so is there an easy way of upgrading my rom set as i believe im missing out on alot as my pc is quite a good spec.

Ive tried to read up on clrmamepro or something but it dont make sense on what i need.

Did you download your roms? 

What version do you want to upgrade to?  The latest?

My friend gave them to me as he was having a sort out. They are on about 7 dvds and have "romburner" printed on the front. I would like to update to a more recent version. My pc spec is 2.6ghz p4 with 250gb hd and 2gb ram with nvidia 256mb grafix card built in?

well depending on what version the roms are, if they arent the latest, you may need to get a newer version of ROMs before you can upgrade your MAME.  It's nessacary to have roms that match what mame you are using.

Once you have those, just install MAME and put the roms in the roms folder in the folder you install MAME into, thats all there is to it, just make sure your roms are the right version...  Google them, they arent hard to find.

its very simple
1 copy your dvds to a folder on your c drive if you have not done that
2 get a torrent with the latest build and point that to your roms folder
3 get mame 139 and install that in your mame folder
once your torrent finishes updating your roms, you can use clearmamepro to get rid of files you dont need or just live things like that and youll be fine.
you might need to get a chds torrent too if you want to run games like killer instint or sfiii....good luck.

Ive got the complete rom set including chds for mame 0.87 so im using mame0.87 on my cab and i did the above. The only reason im wondering if i should upgrade is im wondering if im missing out on anything by not having the latest set?

Hi,

I also upgraded from 0.87 to the latest 0.139. Don't know your machine configuration, but in may case also had to upgrade hardware: new graphics card, more memory, more disk space. Then profit to upgrade to Windows 7 ... hope I don't regret it

Ive upgraded my pc to a 2.8ghz p4 with 512mb grafix card and now a 500gb hd. Also can put in either 1.5gb ram or maybe 2gb ram.

from 87 to 139 there are lots of changes to list here, but definitly worth to do it if you have the right hardware....

My setup is an Athlon XP 2000 with 1Gb RAM and 100 Gb disk, graphics card Nvidea 6200 512Gb and Windows 7. Works just fine with 0.139.
